The student will be exposed to a variety of approaches from underpainting, glazes, to impastos, and final surface completion. A variety of projects will emphasize color, composition, materials, and focus on individual expression. Throughout the semester we will have critiques, discussions, and slide presentations. GRADING: Your individual projects will be graded according to a range of criteria and successful completion of course objectives. Attendance Participation/Critique Idea development Class performance Presentation Technical skills 7-8 paintings + a final project at equal value STUDENT SHOW: All students are required to enter a work in the student exhibition. Failing to do so will affect your class participation. ATTENDANCE: According to college policy, students are allowed only FOUR absences throughout the semester,that is 12.5%. After that the instructor may drop the student. Three tardies will be considered as one absence. Please communicate! If you are having a problem with attendance, or find yourself ill talk to me. STUDIO POLICIES: 1. No food or drink in studios or classrooms in the Fine Arts Center. 2. No children in the studios. 3. Please wear appropriate work clothes to class. 4. All students are required to participate in the end of semester clean-up. Office Hours: 11:00 – 12:30 Mondays and Wednesdays or by appointment The Grading Scale Grading will be based on eight projects at 70%. A final project equal to 20% and class participation at 10%. 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 0-59 F Make-up work for not turning in projects not on time, a grade lower for every week the project is not turned in complete. Critiques included. Scholastic Dishonesty: (HCC Student Handbook) Scholastic dishonesty includes cheating on a test, plagiarism (copying someone else’s works ) and collusion (sharing assignment work with another person .) Punitive measures include a grade of O or F for a particular assignment as well as possible probation or dismal from the college system. Please clean up your work area of paint spills, palettes, papers, bottles and water containers. This needs to be done after every work session, as we have others sharing our studio. *This class has a 1000 word paper course requirement. We will talk about such topics as ‘Abstraction vs. Realism’ Students who require reasonable accommodations for disabilities are encouraged to report to STUDENT LEARNING HUB, or call (713) 718-6164 to make necessary arrangements. We use only Acrylic paints. Oil based paints or solvents are not used in this class. 2. We only operate power equipment under faculty supervision. 3. Always wear goggles or eye protection when using power equipment. 4. Children are NOT permitted in our studios. 5. If you need to use KRYLON or other spray paints, use the spray booth. 6. When you are using the studio and it is not class time, lock yourself-in!! 7. We will use paper or board for an exercise devoted to preliminary sketches.
