Need:
Development of Pinon-Juniper Crown Fire Model
Issue:
Pinon-juniper crown fire account for a great portion of public land fires on the
Colorado Plateau, and are very prominent in the Wildland Urban Interface areas of
the Plateau. There are currently no fuel models directly associated with crown fires
typical of pinon-juniper woodlands. In the absence of such a fuel model, fire
behavior specialists must interpolate between several existing fuel models.
Application:
More accurate and reliable fuel models are necessary to predict fire behavior and
likely fire effects in support of fire planning, suppression, and use. The results of the
model would directly influence fire-fighting tactics, as well as decisions related to the
management or use of fire for resource benefit.
Category:
Research - pinon-juniper vegetation, fuel modeling development
Scope:
Regional.
Potential partners:
JFSP, NAU, NSTC.
