ABSTRACT
The completion of Phase I of the Annotated Vascular Plant Database and Publication for Grand
Canyon-Parashant National Monument yielded a Report and Master Species Checklist. The Master
Species Checklist was subdivided into four lists based on the following groups of species: 1)
occurring within boundaries of the monument as confirmed by voucher specimens, 2) reported in
the literature, but not confirmed by a specimen, 3) known from the vicinity, but not recorded from
PARA, and 4) falsely reported or highly questionable as occurring within monument boundaries. A
total of 1012 taxa, representing 93 families, were recorded as present or reported in the flora of the
Monument. Also accomplished during Phase I was the mounting and deposition of  300
1
herbarium specimens at PARA. Six regions were targeted for future field vegetation inventories
including monument lands lying close to lands just outside PARA boundaries: Lime Kiln Canyon,
Black Rock Area, Toroweap Area, Grand Wash Bay, Main Street Valley, and Mount Trumbull
School Area. This project (Phase II) is an expansion of Phase I with the specific objectives to: 1)
inventory regions of interest identified during Phase I, 2) collect flora specimens from sampled
areas, 3) contribute collections to the Grand Canyon-Parashant Monument and Southern Utah
University Herbaria, 4) provide service-learning outreach opportunity with Southern Utah University
students, and 5) generate a NPS General Technical Series publication summarizing the flora of
Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. Accomplishment of these tasks will occur through a
series of field surveys over two growing seasons (2010 and 2011) and consist of 30+ days of
inventory. Floristic collections will document species occurrences, including information on rare and
weedy species. An Annual Progress Report summarizes results from the 2010 inventories whereas
the project culminates in an NPS Technical Report detailing data collected and conclusions reached
after both sampling periods. Information gathered in this effort will help Monument managers
better understand the flora of PARA leading to more informed management decisions.
