The surveys are necessary to meet Section 110 cultural resource identification, assessment, and evaluation, and Section 106 identification prior to undertakings, as required in the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The two fire projects (prescribed burning) will be implemented in 2101. The North Basin Unit of the Roost project area encompasses 1,917 acres. The archeological survey will cover 261 acres of the burn unit, none of which has been previously surveyed. The West Basin Unit of the Roost Burn Unit encompasses 5,508 acres. The archeological survey will cover 299 acres of the burn unit, none of which has been previously surveyed. In the 560 acres specified, the survey shall be 100%-coverage, pedestrian survey. The primary goal is to identify and document fire-sensitive archeological sites and to recommend measures to protect sensitive resources during prescribed fire activities. Non-fire-sensitive sites will also be identified and recommendations made for their management during the prescribed fire.
