The assessment will be completed by the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) in partial fulfillment of the NPS responsibility to conduct a suitability, feasibility and national significance study to designate all, part, or none of this acreage as part of the monument. The primary data used to evaluate for the national significance of the cultural resources will be legacy data. These data have been collected by and are housed at three Flagstaff area institutions: the United States Department of Agriculture Coconino National Forest (CNF); WACA; and MNA. While legacy data will be the primary source for the assessment, newly collected data will also be necessary by means of pedestrian archaeological surveys in select locations. The final product will result in a final report addressing the national significance assessment of the cultural resources surrounding Walnut Canyon National Monument.
