In order to properly manage soundscapes in national parks, scientifically credible and standardized approaches are essential for measuring and managing soundscapes. However, creating standards can be challenging when trying to reach goals that are defined with subjective terms such as undesirable, inappropriate, or excessive. Therefore, the purpose of this cooperative research effort between the NPS Natural Sounds Program and CSU is to work towards the creation of reliable indicators and visitor informed standards that meet desired management objectives pertaining to the visitor experience and natural sounds. However, there are several initial steps that must be taken before any larger efforts can be made. This initial phase of the proposal consists of acoustic monitoring, creation of a sound study instrument, a workshop, data collection and analysis, and related tasks.
