WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT RUBRIC
(BUSG 2305 – Prof. Charles Koen)
The written assignment should be on an issue dealing with business law and some issue involving
general business matters. It can discuss an historic event, a current event, an on-going issue, something
involving your current job/business or a business area in which you have an interest. The written
assignment is worth 20% of your total grade. The assignment should discuss the following categories:
Introduction – Statement of what your paper is about. The introduction should provide sufficient
information to set the tone of the paper and give the reader an overview of the various concepts you
plan to discuss.
Discussion/Analysis (Core) – This portion is the meat of your paper and should provide succinct facts
regarding your issue as well as a thorough policy analysis of the topic. This should not just be a factual
recitation of the event or issue but it should also include an analysis of the laws and the business
concepts you discuss. This means that it should discuss your thoughts and opinion on the issues and
what the long-term effect could be in the business area you research and write on and society as a
whole. You must research and educate yourself on the issue(s) in order to write a successful paper. So
this section should contain a “Facts/Issue” section and a “Discussion/Analysis” section.
Conclusion – Your conclusion should summarize the concepts that you discussed. It should provide a
thorough recap of your research and provide some prediction in relation to your analysis.
This paper should discuss your topic in relation to the various business law topics we've discussed in
class. For example, if you are doing your paper on business ethics in the context of the business area
you work in or are interested in, it should discuss in depth the facts of the business area, some historical
background, factual application of the law(s) involved in the area, ethical problems that are an issue in
the business area, a thorough analysis of why such issues potentially exist, and your thoughts and
opinions on the long-term effect of the law(s) and ethical issues in this area.
Bibliography/List of Citations - This should include a list of your research and where you got
information from. Don't shy away from use of your text as a cite. I would like for you to use additional
citations other than just internet web sources. That's not to say that you cannot use internet sources. But
there are tons of journals and periodicals in the business field that can be accessed.
General Info (from me)
I am not placing a specific page limit on this research paper. To give you an idea of what you should
expect to present a thorough and informative work, I would suggest no less than six double-spaced
pages but if you think you can meet the requirements of the rubric in less give it a shot. Do not
plagiarize! If you use wording or a specific idea from a source you need to cite to it and credit it. I will
take off for failing to cite and produce proper sources and if there's evidence that there is extensive
plagiarism it may have to be dealt with more expansively and appropriately. This should not be an
exercise of cut and pasting from a group of internet articles. That is not credible nor acceptable work.
This should be your process of informing the reader about a topic and then providing a thorough
analysis from your knowledge about the subject through your research. If you have questions please
feel free to ask me at any time. Put in the research and work and it will be a success. The papers are due
the final week of class on Tuesday, May 5.
