GUST 1270: College and Career Success
CAREER PROJECT
OBJECTIVES:
Each student will demonstrate the ability to:
1.
2.
3.
Research the career of his/her choice, using the resources earlier introduced in
the library and the Discover on-line program.
Document your answers with information gathered in your research and credit
your sources in the answer to EACH question (Use Chapter 12,
Communication, as your guideline).
Prepare a BIBLIOGRAPHY in the APA style introduced in the library
orientation and handout.
There are three parts to your career project:
1. A written portion.
2. A report of an interview
3. An oral presentation.
The written portion of your project will include the following:
1)
Write a formal introduction (label it “Introduction”). Be sure and italicize
your THESIS STATEMENT (italicize only the thesis statement in your
introduction.) Design an introductory paragraph that creates interest in your
reader and reflects the purpose of your project.
2)
Number and write each question, and then answer it. Answers must be in a
full paragraph Citer sources for any statistics or quoted information used (e.g.
Nursing Journal reports that the starting salary for registered nurses in Texas
is $... Of course the specific Nursing Journal article used will be included in
your Bibliography.) If you are uncertain of how to reference a source, ask a
Librarian. Do this EARLY in your writing preparation so that you don’t get
caught at the end with improper or no references in your seven answers.
(Questions 2, 3, 4, and 5 require that you cite at least one reference from
your research. The others are more personal and don’t require a citation of a
source.)
3)
Write a conclusion, after the answered questions (Label it “Conclusion”.)
4) Include a BILBIOBRAPHY on a separate page. Title the page
(BIBLIOGRAPHY). Center your title. You must include a MINIMUM of 10
bibliographic entries. They must be in the AMA style. You may use a
MAXIMUM of 5 websites entries. The other 5 should be a combination of books,
magazines, journals, newspapers, or other print material (“Traditional” sources.)
5) Your CAREER PROJECT will be WORD PROCESSED, STAPLED and turned
in on the due date TBA in class and on the Learning Web. Late papers, if
accepted, will be downgraded.
Cover the following seven questions (Remember, question/answer format, NOT an
essay!):
1.
Why did you choose this particular career?
2.
What personality characteristics (see: text and typefocus.com) are likely
required for this career? How does you own personality match/not match?
3.
What education/training is required for this career? What is your plan for
achieving this education/training?
4.
What skills do you currently possess that will be helpful in this career? Which
skills do you think you will have to work the hardest to develop?
5.
What is the outlook for this career? In terms of salary? Positions available?
Future possibilities?
6.
What do you think you will like the most about this career? What do you
expect that you will like the least?
7.
In relation to your career, where do you see yourself in five year? In 10
years?
CONCLUSION: A formal conclusion to your paper that reflects your paper’s purpose.
