Vision Statement We develop educational leaders who create tomorrow’s opportunities. Mission Statement Our mission is to prepare competent and committed professionals who will make positive differences for children, young adults, and others in schools. IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP OVERVIEW The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership is a 36-hour program with specializations in the following leadership areas: School Leadership K-12, Principal K-12, Educational Foundations, and Community College. Although designed and intended primarily for professionals working in educational settings, this degree may also be appropriate for individuals looking to assume leadership positions in other professions. Coursework leading to a Master's degree is offered in numerous locations across Arizona. Admission applications are processed throughout the course of the year and there is no specified limit on the number of students accepted. No teaching experience is required to apply to this program. The M.Ed. in Educational Leadership degree comprises four emphases among which you may choose. Each emphasis provides you with an opportunity to develop and enrich your understanding of the contexts and forces that shape educational policy and practice. We hope that by understanding and being able to articulate critical issues in education, you will be a participant in the educational and social changes currently taking place in our society. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ School Leadership K-12 Emphasis The School Leadership emphasis is designed to help candidates prepare to serve in leadership positions at the K-12 level which do not necessarily require State administrator certification. Examples may include, but are not limited to, teachers serving as a department chair of an academic unit, leading curriculum initiatives, working with school and community programs, etc. This emphasis requires 36 hours of coursework, as follows: 12 hours of required foundations courses (including a research course and a course in school law) 15 hours of required leadership skills development courses 9 hours of specialization electives ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Principal K-12 Emphasis The Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Principal K-12 emphasis is designed to prepare students to qualify to serve as a school principal at the K-12 level. The School Administration Principal K-12 emphasis requires 36 hours of coursework as follows: 6 hours of required foundations courses (including a research course) 27 hours of required leadership skills development courses 3 hours in an internship experience requiring 135 clock hours and a separate application process. This emphasis differs from the School Leadership emphasis in that the Principal K-12 emphasis provides students with a program specifically focused on preparing candidates to serve as a school principal at the K-12 level that requires State administrator certification. Students in this program will apply for their internship experience the semester prior to doing their internship, but do not have a separate application to any other certificate-only program. No thesis option is available in this emphasis. Educational Foundations Emphasis The emphasis in Educational Foundations focuses on students who want to teach education courses to undergraduates at the college level, or for students who need a foundational background to become a K-12 educational consultant, administer a charter school, etc., or for those who are interested in pursuing a doctorate degree and then teaching at a higher institution in the Foundations area. The emphasis in Educational Foundations requires 36 hours of coursework as follows: 18 hours of required foundations courses 3 hours of research or statistics 6 hours of required leadership skills development courses 9 hours of other selected community college or leadership courses. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Community College This emphasis builds on interests in teaching and student affairs so individuals can assume leadership roles in community colleges or other institutions of higher education. Students in this emphasis generally have, or anticipate having, a staff or faculty position at a community college or other institution of higher learning. The emphasis in community college requires 36 hours of coursework, as follows: 12 hours of required foundations courses 12 hours of required leadership skills development courses 12 hours of required community college specialization courses For additional information concerning this program, please contact Dr. Gaye Luna at 602/776-4602 or gaye.luna@nau.edu. EDL Master’s Program – Revised 4/22/10 jo NOTES: Required courses and other requirements are listed in each Program of Study. No more than three 500-level classes can be used in any emphasis of this entire program. PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS The following are guidelines to help you to understand our policies and know what to expect from our program: Many classes are available around the state and on the web. Please be aware, however, that you cannot earn a Principal K12 degree for the Principal Certification via web courses only. The syllabus for every course is reviewed by Northern Arizona University and approved as appropriate for graduate-level classes. Instructors are accountable to the university for following the syllabus outline of course requirements, meeting times, assignments, tests, and grading policies. Graduate study is time consuming. You can anticipate spending three or more hours of study, reading, and research for every hour you spend in the classroom. To earn three hours of academic credit, classes must meet for a minimum of 45 classroom hours. Take these demands seriously as you plan your academic schedule. Most graduate courses will have a research component. If your library skills are not current, you will need to reacquaint yourself with modern library practice. Becoming familiar with computerized library systems, how to access current periodicals, and other basic research methods will be important to your success as a graduate student. Writing is a critical aspect of graduate study. Almost every course will contain some writing: research papers, article critiques, book reviews, position papers, and essay exams are commonly required. Individual and/or group oral presentations, class discussions, and consistent attendance will represent a substantial percentage of your grade in most classes. M.ED. IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP APPLICATION INFORMATION In order to pursue an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, students must be admitted to the Graduate College and to the Educational Leadership program; these are two separate processes. If you are applying on line, partial application to the Educational Leadership program is simultaneous with your application to the NAU Graduate Admissions Office. The most expedient, and the preferred, way to be admitted to the university and to your program is by using the online admission application available on the NAU Graduate Admissions’ web page found at http://www.nau.edu/gradcol/indexgc.html. On rare occasions, some students may not be able to access the online application. In these instances, paper copies of the Graduate College Admission application may be printed out from the web page above or obtained by calling 928/523-4348. Should you choose to submit a paper copy, you will need to submit two applications - one to the Graduate College and a separate application to the department. Paper copies of the department application materials are located later in this document, can be found on the web at coe.nau.edu/academics/EDL, or can be obtained at the EDL department office in Mesa or at your local NAU Extended Campus Site. The Admission Process Guide is now available on the Graduate College website in the publications and forms section: http://www.nau.edu/gradcol/admissionprocess_current.pdf. To be admitted, you must complete the following APPLICATION STEPS: 1) Complete the Graduate College admission application, either paper copy or on-line, and submit the necessary fees and documents to the address listed on the form. The Graduate College admission application can be found at http://www.applyweb.com/apply/northazg/ the Graduate College phone number is 928/523-4348. 2) If you apply to the Graduate College on line, our department will receive a copy of your program application. If you apply to the Graduate College using a paper form, you must also submit the program application to your advisor in paper form; your advisor should forward a copy to the EDL department office. A departmental program application is found later in this document and can be downloaded. 3) Meet with an advisor to establish a Program of Study (POS); your advisor will then submit a copy to the EDL department office in Mesa. Programs of Study for the School Leadership K-12, Principal K-12, Community College and Foundations emphases are found later in this document. 4) Copies of all admission paperwork, including a fully signed POS, must arrive in the EDL office in Mesa before you register for your second semester of EDL classes. Our M.Ed. program in Educational Leadership has rolling admission; there are no admission application deadlines. However, you should begin applying to the Educational Leadership program before beginning EDL course work; you do not need teaching experience to apply. Students may be admitted into the EDL master’s program based on an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher and professional interests that are consistent with the program. If you do not meet this requirement, you may elect one of the alternative EDL Master’s Program – Revised 4/22/10 jo admission routes specified later in this document, including “conditional” admission based upon completing 9 hours of graduate coursework applicable to the degree with a 3.3 GPA or higher. If you elect to seek admission through the coursework option, you must seek a change in admission status from “conditional” to “regular,” through your advisor, as soon as you have completed the requisite 9 hours. Ideally, you should apply to the Educational Leadership program before beginning EDL course work. However, all admission paperwork must be completed and arrive in the EDL office in Mesa before you register for your second semester of EDL classes or your application file may be terminated. Please note that no more than 9 hours of coursework taken as a non-degree student can be counted toward a graduate degree. It is important, therefore, if you were initially admitted through the Graduate College as a non-degree-seeking student, to complete your departmental application and notify the Graduate College that you are changing your status to “degree seeking” before you complete any classes after your 9th credit is earned. If you have any questions about program admission or application procedures, please contact your local NAU Extended Campus Office, any of the EDL faculty advisors or the Educational Leadership department on the Mesa campus by emailing Bea.Castillo@nau.edu. The Educational Leadership office can also be reached by email at edl@nau.edu, by U.S. mail at 145 N. Centennial Way Fourth Floor, Mesa, AZ 85201 Attn: Bea Castillo, or by phone at 602/776-4690. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE M.Ed. IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Admission will be granted if the student has an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. OR Admission will be granted if the student scores at or above the 25th percentile on the Subject Test in Education on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). It is the student’s responsibility to provide the Educational Leadership Office with the GRE or MAT scores if they are being admitted under this provision. OR Admission will be granted if the student scores at or above the 25th percentile on the General Verbal and Quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). It is the student’s responsibility to provide the Educational Leadership Office with the GRE or MAT scores if they are being admitted under this provision. OR Admission will be granted if the student scores at or above the 25th percentile on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). OR You may apply for Conditional admission if your undergraduate GPA is less than 3.0. Your status can be changed to Regular upon completion of 9 NAU hours relevant to your program of study with a minimum GPA of 3.3. If you choose this option, please notify your advisor when you have completed the required nine (9) hours; your advisor must then notify the EDL office with a memo including your name, address and NAU ID number. Admission under this option is not automatic. Readmission: If a student misses three or more consecutive regular semesters (not including summers), he or she will need to apply for readmission to the university through the Graduate College. He or she may also need to reapply for admission to the EDL program. In this situation, students will be asked to re-submit all department application materials, a new Program of Study, and updates in contact information. ADVISING The following EDL faculty advisors are usually available during the fall and spring semesters, as well as occasionally during the summer semesters: Online Advising online.advising@nau.edu 800-426-8315 EDL Master’s Program – Revised 4/22/10 jo Your Program of Study should be followed carefully when selecting courses. Any exceptions should be approved in advance and in writing by the EDL department chair. Your advisor must also review and submit any petitions to Transfer Credit from another institution. Upon completion of all required coursework, students must apply for graduation; applications for graduation are on the Graduate College home page. CHANGING EMPHASES WITHIN THE PROGRAM Each emphasis within the MEd in Educational Leadership program has a distinct Program of Study listing the specific classes required for that emphasis. Any student wishing to move from one emphasis to another must meet with his or her advisor and submit a replacement Program of Study to supersede any previously-submitted EDL Program of Study. A memo must also be sent to the Graduate College so the information can be updated on the LOUIE information system.
