Discussion: This club is intended to aid students in coming to resolutions in educating them in
alternative resolutions. They are taking senior capstone classes on dispute resolutions. The
advisor and CCJ chairwoman Dr. Nielsen both support this club and are happy to provide
resources. Senator Fox asks how they plan on promoting; they plan on using the printing
services to create fliers and to update students through a section on a bulletin board. They plan
on using the contact information provided by the CCJ Club.
Vote: Unanimous, item a (Club Recognition: Alternative Dispute Resolutions [ADR]) has been
approved
Motion: Senator Chan move to vote on item b, OA: Gamma Phi Beta, $500
Second: Senator Creer
Discussion: This money is for nine girls to attend a regional leadership conference; fourteen
other schools are participating. This conference will help them grow as leaders and receive
ideas for their own chapter. The sorority is paying for the registration fee of $380 per person,
which also pays for hotels. However, each girl is responsible for funding their own airfare, so
this money will help cover that cost. Senator Woodhouse asks if they have attended this
conference in the past; yes, they have attended every year, but this is the first time they have
asked for money. In years past, girls used to use their own personal money. Senator
Woodhouse asks what Gamma Phi Beta will bring back from the conference; any leadership
tools can be applied to other leadership roles on campus. Chairman Lee asks who was selected;
everyone on the executive board, as well as the safety and wellness chairwoman and the new
member educator. Senator Woodhouse asks why they chose to fly; it was more convenient and
cheaper.

Association, $500
Second: Senator Creer
Discussion: The purpose for this bill is to fund the new year’s celebration on February 28th at
the Du Bois ballroom, which will honor the biggest festival in China’s culture. This event is a
great opportunity to bring all students together. Senator Woodhouse asks if they will have
anything other than food at this event; there will also be games, shows, and performances.
This money will simply cover food so that they can fund the other activities. Senator Fox asks
how they plan on advertising this event; with the help of their advisor, they will be inviting
everyone by email. In order to get international and American students, they will be making
posters and placed in popular areas!

Executive Report
a. President- Sammy Smart
-Printers should all now be working on any computers. As for the State of the
Student Address, President Smart has created a list of 65 to 70 students who have
been recommended by deans and organizations. The College of Health and Human
Services and Madeline Cypert who will be going to Mexico on a mission trip will be
presenting. Tomorrow, there is a liberal studies meeting; if you would like to join,
please contact President Smart after meeting. It will help others understand how to
apply liberal arts to real life. It will be held at Gateway. She recently attended an
athletics meeting; please answer the questions that President Smart will be sending
in reference to the master plan that the athletics department has been planning. Is
there a time that everyone can attend a meeting for the university strategic plan?
Tuesday at 4 was the general consensus. If Brianna Gomez applies for a regional
presidency position, can ASNAU write a letter of support? It would recognize that
we agree that she does a great job with her current position. Senator Fox
mentioned having her come in to ask questions. RHA President entails being the
president of all hall associations; she helps fund events for halls and leadership
development. Dr.Brandel recommends her; she has been the president of RHA for
two years. He was the past advisor and believes that she is one of the top
presidents that they have ever had. Chief of Staff Mastrud recommends her because
she fights for the cost of rent and meal plans, making campus living more affordable
for all university students. By informal poll, majority of the senate believes that
President Smart can sign on behalf of ASNAU to recommend her. Congratulations to
Shayla for being the True Blue Winner this week!
b. Vice President of Student affairs- Annsley Niemann
- Thanks to Senator Lopez for helping with the helium tank and to Senator
McDiarmid for writing the bill for Equality Week. Senator Woodhouse mentioned to
clubs that there is a new location and they are not pumped; how can we get them
more interested? VP Niemann explains that they have more space and resources.
VP Lee received 10 of the 12 senators’ emails to clubs and they have all mentioned
Club Headquarters. As far as Snowjack Express, there were smaller numbers this
past weekend, but it will continue! Tell your friends and get the word out. Senator
Woodhouse reports that someone called the office today about how to sign up and
the lady said that the link does not work. Though it does work, it is a more difficult
process; please be aware of this process. At the time that it was set up, there was no
way to have a direct link. However, with our new ITS, it is on the agenda to get a
direct link. Please continue hanging your posters up for Snowjack Express! Equality
Week is coming up; the LGBTQ will be having several events, so please support
them. There will also be tabling go on during the week.
c. Vice President of Academic Affairs- Ryan Lee
-VP Lee reports that we send two representatives to the Res Life meetings on
Wednesdays at 3. Chief of Staff Mastrud volunteers to participate in this committee.
Thanks to all of the senators who have participated in one-on-ones! This helps with
communication. Thank you for encouraging your clubs to be patient on bills and
OAs, so start getting the word out again! Hours are due, so print them out and sign
them. Reminder: There is no meeting on March 14.
d. Chief of Staff- Makenzie Mastrud
-Chief of Staff Mastrud is still working on election matters. There have been many
ITS interviews, as well as Special Events to be planned. In addition, the new goal
board is put up behind the senate clerk’s desk. Take a piece of paper and write
down steps to make a goal. If you think we have met a goal, feel free to take the
arrow out and put it next to a goal.
Staff Reports
A. ASA- Jack, Danielle, Shayna
-The ABOR meeting is next Thursday and Friday. Each school will be proposing a
tuition plan and has two hours to present to ABOR. The two-dollar fee is still up in
the air. The “opt-in” model is one option; if you can attend the meeting, please go
and support! On February 14th , it is Arizona’s birthday! In celebration, the ASA
interns will be writing valentines to elected officials and holding a kissing both (“We
love our elected officials, now show your love for us!” is the theme). In addition,
Sandra Day O’Connor is meeting with ASA and their interns to discuss civic
engagement. Yesterday was the kick-off event; there were 19 letters from
committed students willing to fight HB 21-69. During the meeting with President
Haeger, they discussed a statewide pledge program. However, they are not sure if
this is going to be possible. The pledge program is not sustainable at U of A because
there is no increase in attendance; ASU has too big of numbers to sustain it. Please
write a letter in reference to HB 21-69 to support ASA! They will be sent out within
the next week. An overview of HB 21-69: students would have to choose to fund
student organizations (ASNAU, ASA) by writing in to the administration to give their
money; in addition, those organizations cannot be politically active at all (meaning
they will not be able to take a stance on political matters as an organization). This
will affect every student on this campus. ASA’s mission statement is to strive for
more affordable and accessible education (textbook prices, financial aid), but their
new focus will be accessibility. Please fill out surveys that they created to have a
voice.
B. Public Relations- Matt Villa
-PR finished the State of the Student invitations, as well as the elections posters
which will be in The Lumberjack. He is also working with VP Niemann to promote
Cub Headquarters. He is also focusing on ways to highlight what the 23 fee goes
toward in a way that all students can fully understand its use. Election packets are
available on February 7th; posters need to be hung up by Monday for election code
purposes.
C. ITS-Joey Smoll
-ITS is looking at other associated student websites to compare; in comparison to
other AZ universities, what makes their web pages pop? He would like to channel
that into ASNAU’s webpage.
D. Special events- Tony Buchta, Sara Martin
-Special Events has been working on the ASNAU banquet, as well as the State of the
Student Address and LOUIE awards. They are still waiting for contract information
from the most recent survey. Thedate and location for apr 27th at high country conf,
by 6 for banquet
E. NSG- Representatives
-NSG decided on their big event, a dance-a-thon. Thanks to anyone who spoke at
their last meeting. P.S. Please attend Sally’s yoga class! 

b. Adam Fox-Senator Fox says that they met with their dean last Friday;
they discussed ASA matters as well as everything that ASNAU is
participating in. They realized that students are still unaware of what the
23 fee does. There will be a follow-up meeting in February. Thank you
for passing his bill earlier; he also attended the parking appeals
committee, where he got to serve as the chairman.
College of Business
a. Jeremy Chan- Senator Chan reports his attempt to schedule a dean’s
meeting. He has just been making copies in the office.

would like to talk about ASNAU there and get the word out.
College of Forestry, Engineering, and Natural Sciences
a. Oregon McDiarmid-Senator McDiarmid reports that they have been
discussing online versus personalized classes. There is a committee for it
that they have been asked to sit on. On a personal report, he got to sit
on the parking appeals board. He attended the club sports meeting
where they discussed a fee for all sports players. They are also
discussing whether or not they wish to handpick their players. ASNAU
wishes to ensure equality for every club and to make sure that they are
following proper documentation. The $10 fee in discussion has not been
clarified (where will the money be going?). They are under the
impression that ASNAU is in support of it; however, there may be other
opinions that they do not know about before we endorse it.
b. Shayla Woodhouse-Senator Woodhouse reports writing a bill for SAFE (a
club) and the Pre-Vet Club. She also cleaned the senate desk!
Advisor Reports (Rick Brandel and Art Farmer)
Rick Brandel— ASNAU elections are coming up very soon! Please be recruiting and
considering executive positions. The leadership retreat with President Haeger went
very well; they have discussed everything that was debated during the retreat. Senator
Cross asks if you are supposed to receive a warning before getting an actual ticket; Dr.
Brandel believes that you are supposed to. Senator Fox suggests having him bring this
issue up in their parking appeals committee. They can keep track of how often a person
gets ticketed, so be aware of that. Golden Axe awards applications are now open
online; they are due March 1st. They are expecting to honor about 40 to 45 students.
He encourages us to provide input on the athletics club’s master plan; think about
intramural activities in addition to our other teams. Dr. B now understands what a
mouse is (for a computer).
Art Farmer— No Report
Discussion Items
Funding Materials (Capstone Projects): A group of individuals requested funding for capstone
project materials. However, the documents state that we cannot fund physical items (with the
exception of foods from Sodexo). Last year, Young Life wanted materials to build houses and
we denied them; nonetheless, we still provided them money for other resources. Chairman Lee
asks how everyone feels about this subject.
Senator Woodhouse explains that the engineering department is building a prosthetic arm and
foot and they want to then donate it to Bolivia for amputees to engineer and mass produce the
model. Chairman Lee asks what kinds of materials the senate does not feel comfortable
funding; “Any supply that the organization keeps for themselves or anything directly donated,”
Senator Smart responds. Many people agree.
Chairman Lee reminds them to consider that the money would also be funding the educational
experience. Senator Creer says, “If we say yes and then they do not send the prosthetic, we
just funded a project no different than any other project. Keep in mind the domino effect that
could result.”
Many senators are uncomfortable with funding this project because they have (even recently)
been in a position where they had to turn people down due to this policy. Changing the policy
midway through the school year is not necessarily fair. Chief of Staff Mastrud asks them to
compare the past requests to this one.
Senator Reddig asks if they could create a separate category for capstone projects in the policy
with separate rules. Perhaps, they could even suspend the purchasing policy for this specific
project. Kristi informs the senate that they absolutely cannot fund academic materials to be
used for tutorial purposes under an organization allocation. She recommends being consistent
with the organization aspect. Though we do want to help students grow and develop, Dr.
Brandel mentions that ASNAU funds “out of the classroom” experiences; does this qualify as
one of those? Senator Woodhouse suggests going to the college to see if they can receive
funding somehow. Chairman Lee asks that, had the prosthetic not been intended to be
donated, would ASNAU fund it? Majority of the senators say no and that it is not an equal
opportunity.
By a senate vote of 11 to 1, the senate is in favor of upholding the document. ASNAU will not
fund materials in circumstances like this.
Announcements
Kristi reports that she will need to give up her position here at ASNAU due to health reasons.
Shelby will also be attending GSG meetings and providing reports after those occur.
The trophy goes to Danielle for working so hard on ASA matters! She is always positive, so
congratulations!
