Motion: Senator Roos moves to vote on SB 28-2: Taran Depaola

Second: Senator Davis

Discussion: So in the fall semester last year, I was awarded the Hooper award for my research on neurotransmitters in the brain. I am looking for funding to attend the Society for Neuroscience Conference is in Chicago October 17 th -

21 st . I want to go present my research among professionals in the field. I want to benefit the school by bringing back information to improve the university’s research capacity. I am requesting money for flight, hotel, cab

rides and the registration fee.

Item B- SB 28-3: Dylan Barbera

Motion: Senator Roos moves to vote on SB 28-3: Dylan Barbera

Second: Senator Davis

Discussion: My funding request is for the same conference as Taran’s. I work with him (Taran). We are applying to present our research with top professionals in the flied. My funding requests will cover the same things.

Senator Carr: What is your research?

Dylan: The cranially dynamics of temporal digging.

Vote: Unanimous, SB 28-3 has been passed.

Item C- SB 28-4: Stella Carr

Motion: Senator Rosic moves to vote on SB 28-4: Stella Carr

Second: Senator Nunnally

Discussion: Hello, I am requesting funding for the Arizona Town Hall

Conference. We look and work through the censuses project been around for

50 years. They pull people from different demographics and they come together to discuss different topics. This years topics is about water/ water conservation and I’m an environmental major. Most people who attend are adults and last time I went I was the only undergrad. I plan to bring back the information for my course work and the school.

Senator Anderson: If it is a conference why is there registration?

Stella: They rent out conference center; also the fee covers lodging. This isn’t a low end conference it a high one. We have really important people coming and this is just the student price, I can’t imagine what the regular price is.

Senator Graham: This isn’t with any club?

Stella: No. I have applied for a scholarship but have heard nothing back so far; this is in case I don’t get anything.

Senator Copeland: Did you get funding for the first time you went?

Stella: Yes, my professor helped me, but this year I am on my own so I have contacted more people.

Senator Roos: Can’t you look to the teacher again?

Stella: No since it isn’t for the same course. Its separate. I have been in contact with the lady for the scholarship, but it is expensive.

Vote: Majority rule, Opposed: Senator Davis, Anderson, and Copeland

Abstained: Senator L’Ecuyer and Carr, SB 28-4: Stella Carr has passed

Item D- SB 28-5: Alexander Ballesteros

Motion: Senator Roos moves to vote on SB 28-5: Alexander Ballesteros

Second: Senator Sowerwine

Discussion: Hi! I am Alexander. I am requesting funding to attend the Society of Hawaiian Archaeology Conference. The conference is October 9-11 th in

Kauai. My research is on how the trigger plantation worked with the

Hawaiian agriculture. I am asking for helping with hotel, gas, and transportation; the fellowship is funding everything else. I am going as a representative of NAU and will be presenting on what we are teaching and doing our research on.

Vote: Unanimous, SB 28-5: Alexander Ballesteros has passed

Item E- SB 28-6: Cardinal Key

Motion: Senator Ridge moves to vote on SB 28-6: Cardinal Key

Second: Senator Mathew

Discussion: Casey: Cardinal Key is an honor society. We are the ones that host the blood drives on campus, as well as other things. We are planning on attending a conference in Atlanta, Georgia. We have four representatives that are going since we are the largest group in the nation. We were also asked to present on how our chapter has been so successful over the past few years in the hopes of helping provide information on how other chapters can be like us. Also are members are going to go for leadership positions. We are requesting funding for flight, hotel, and registration fees. The conference has agreed to pay for one member, but we still need to fund the other three.

Senator Roos: What do you mean by leadership positions at the conference?

Casey: We have some members interested in holding national positions within the organization. We believe that will be a good representation of

NAU.

Senator Carr: Will the members be around long within in the club to share/pass on the information gained at the conference?

Casey: We are taking 2 juniors, 1 sophomore, 1 junior, and 1 senior. So yes

there will be people to pass along the information for future years to come.

Senator Moore-Sharp: How many members are in the club currently?

Casey: We have 26 members after this year’s recruitment.

Vote: Unanimous, SB 28-6: Cardinal Key has passed

Item F- SB-7: Hunting Ground

Motion: Senator Roos moves to vote on SB-7: Hunting Ground

Second: Senator Graham

Discussion:

Chair Dietlin: This is a senate bill to allow Vanessa to spend the money to rent out Prochnow. Hunting ground is going to be shown there for the week of It’s

On US and since its over $500 you guys (senate) have to approve her sending the money.

Senator Moore-Sharp: Is it about sexual assault?

Chair Dietlin: Yes

Senator Moore-Sharp: Did you play it last year? Or tried to play it?

Chair Dietlin: Yes, we tried to play it but we couldn’t figure out the license stuff for it. We did found out this year that all we had to do is buy the movie to be able to show it.

Vote: Unanimous, SB 28-7: Hunting Ground has passed

Item G- SB 28-8: Budget Lines

Motion: Senator Moore-Sharp moves to vote on SB 28-8: Budget Lines

Second: Senator Beghtol

Discussion:

Chair Dietlin: Alex (Senator Roos) was kind enough to write a bill so that we can open the lines and start paying for the things we need. Things like the planning for the carnival and other projects.

Senator Rosic: Does opening it up let us reallocate money? Like we talked about more money for diversity events.

Chair Dietlin: Reallocation won’t be until the end of the year once the events

are passed.

Vote: Unanimous, SB28-8: Budget Lines has passed

Chair Dietlin: For all the clubs here, we are moving into reports if you want to stay you can, if not thank you.

- Good Morning ASNAU, I am emailing you my report so Amanda does not have to read a million reports tonight at senate. Sorry I could not be in attendance due to attending ABOR this week. We have already learned so much and are excited for what is to come today and tomorrow; Vanessa will include more in her report about ABOR.As far as myself and staff we have been working really hard this week regarding carnival. It is just a month away (yikes). I have finally received the quote from Midway West and there is a couple changes I would like to see but for the most part I am really happy with it. We have also started the contract and the insurance for that. As far as La Fiamma & AZ Bounce around we have started the insurance for them. I plan to set up a meeting for next week with Disability Resources to make it attend-able by all students. I am willing to make whatever changes we need in order to do so. If you cannot work at the Carnival due to a prior commitment please let

me know by TOMORROW. I am starting to make the list of duties and I need a lot of help in order to make this a successful event. If I do not get an email from you by tomorrow I will be planning on you being

there. If you have already talked to Ali or myself you are excused. I am really happy with the genre voting results and we have our first meeting with SUN in early October to start planning. PR has been working on some great advertisements so if you need one please get the requests in as soon as possible. Finally, senators, please talk to your deans whether it is an email or in your face-to-face meeting. Amy and Taylor have emailed you the dates and the plan for all I just to know the date and what your dean wants so we can move forward with planning that. That being said, if it is your college I am expecting you to be at the event for the entire time (unless you have a class conflict). Please let me know if you have any questions.

Connor: I have been doing It’s On Us logo stuff and am in the process of creating a geotag for the week. Also our big poster needs to be redesigned for reprinting, so I am going to be cleaning that up.

Reed: Any questions or comments?

Senator Moore-Sharp: You know my graphic design friend from last week? I will give you his email.

Amy: Any questions?

Senator Carr: If we have been talking to our deans about that event, when do you want us to know for sure about it?

Taylor: After you talk to your dean, touch base with us so we can order things. We want to do at least one a month and whoever picks a date; that date will be gone. We know deans are super busy, but please talk to them and get back to us. d.

Not present e.

NSG- Kali Morris, Hali Wetzel

Kali: We had our first meeting Tuesday. It was super successful; we had 25 people come and had to make room to fit everyone. We are thinking of moving meetings to a bigger room but will wait and see how it goes from here. More people kept emailing me throughout the week to sign up. We have sent out an email for applications for them to fill out if they want positions. We will be voting on those people on

Tuesday. We kind of found a truck for homecoming, only if a dad can drive it in the parade.

Chair Dietlin: Yes he can.

Kali: Sweet, exciting!

Committee Reports

Senator Graham: The only thing is that we had problems with how everyone’s bills were written. Please write in complete sentences on the bills; also use correct punctuation and proof read it.

B.

Legislative: Senator Carr

- This week we decided we will be working to create a diversity position

Senator Reports

College of Arts and Letters a.

Abbey Matthew- Wrote a senate bill for them to go to the neurologist conference. b.

Stefan Rosic- I went to legislative and got one submission for a bill. In legislative, we talked about making a submission page for question or suggests that the student body may have for

ASNAU. Once I make that, I will let everyone know. Thinking maybe making it a Facebook page.

Senator Carr: They (student body) can post a question in the open forum and if it turns ugly we could just end it.

Kali: Maybe talk to Chantz, he probably would be open to having it on the website. It won’t be as formal, but talk to him.

Gabriella Nunnally- I wrote my first bill and saw my dean at an event yesterday. We are working on setting up meeting with her (our dean). c.

b.

Stella Carr- I wrote my first bill for a physics student to attend a conference. I contacted my dean about hosting a donuts event and also contacted special events about that. Went to ABOR this morning with Drake (Senator Ridge) and Kyra. We also had lunch with the student body representatives from ASU and

UofA.

University College a.

Marc Moore-Sharp- My meeting with Dean Banks is the 30th at

11 pm. I also wrote a bill and hopefully it was in complete sentences. In my free time I have been doing some research for the questions/suggestions I am going to bring up to the dean about NAU 100.

Advisor Reports (Cindy Anderson and Kristine Heflin)

Cindy Anderson— I spent the morning at ABOR and walked away with more respect for our president. She had a great presentation and really represented this school well. The regent’s serve an eight year term; they often are using weird terms since they are speaking with folks with not big backgrounds in education. Mark Killigan spoke from his notes and he was super formal today. The board was impress with our institution and its cohort’s; that is how we get our official enrollment numbers. We wait to count till the 21 st day after classes start since we don’t want numbers that don’t take into consideration students that drop. The president wanted an open look at retention rate and told us that we can track our students even without them being here. The numbers didn’t include the many people that come to NAU just for 100 and 200 level classes to get a great start and then move to ASU or UofA for higher degrees. Those count against us in our retention rate. The other thing I would book mark, we spent more time talking about K12 preparation because only 46% of high school students are qualified for admission for the three Arizona universities. Out of all the

Arizona students, 42% are Hispanic and only 44.9% of them are eligible for college admission. The board is working with lower education since we know that it will play a big part in higher education. We also learned that 2/3 of jobs in Arizona require a post-secondary education.

Senator Moore-Sharp: What are the factors that lead to the percentage?

Cindy: What I heard president Cline say when she talked about K12 preparation was the demand for teachers is big and disproportional. We are excited because we know that the NAU has had an all time high retention rate of first year student this year, but still ¼ of our first year students will not return next year. The other thing is that only 3-5% at ASU qualified for financial aid while NAU has always been a school that knows the power of a degree and our job is to raise the bar and make it valuable. Very interesting to see how the spoke of education and all of executive board had great

opening remarks.

Kristine Heflin— Quick note before I get started. Talking about retention, the data I collected from students involved in campus is 85%; what you do as

ASNAU helps them do that. This week I worked hard on carnival stuff with our insurance books. With family weekend our parent coordinator is looking for some people from ASNAU to present the winning family the blanket we have from our raffle. Can I get a see of hands? Wow lots of people come see me after and we will draw names.

Senator Mathew: Can we buy those blankets?

Kristine: You can we get them from downtown, but we order them with our school colors. They are probably at least $80 for just black since they are so nice.

Kristine: We also get the embroidered with the NAU crest.

Senator Sowerwine: How do we sign up to be in raffle?

Kristine: In the union we have tabling and I image you can stop by to put your name in the raffle. We use to do a contest from the family that came the longest and/or who had the most students enrolled here, but it’s easier to do the raffle.

Chair Dietlin: The blankets are upward of a $130.

Senator Rosic: I want to make a comment on what Cindy said and how it shows why we need to diversity position in ASNAU.
