1.0 Introduction
The physical movement of people within or among communities is a
fundamental aspect of human life. The economic success of a city is dependant on
the ability of citizens to access the resources that allow them to grow as members of
a community. As the 21st century progresses, more and more cities are seeing
significant increases in human activity and require transportation solutions to allow
both citizens and visitors to move freely. This literary review will examine how
effectively transportation systems are able to move people within and around the
city of Kochi, a rising economic powerhouse located near the southern tip of India.
Topics of exploration will include the driving factors of the Kochi economy, different
neighborhood types and social classes of the region, available forms of
transportation and the current and future uses of mass transit.
