Internship Opportunity for Northern Arizona University Junior or Senior Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 Position: MMJ Intern for KPNX Channel 12 – Flagstaff bureau. Internship mainly held in Flagstaff at the KPNX bureau, housed in NAU’s School of Communication. There will also be a couple of weeks of work in Phoenix at the KPNX newsroom as schedules allow. Available: For the semesters of: Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 Hours: 10 – 15 hours per week, schedule may vary with class load. Pay: $10/hour, plus 3 hours of course credit based upon 10 hours of internship per week for each semester. Description: An internship with Channel 12 News offers a wealth of learning opportunities. It includes a schedule which allows current Junior and Senior level students (only) to live in Flagstaff, attend NAU courses and still get assistance from professional journalists in the Flagstaff KPNX news bureau. The selected intern reports directly to and is under the supervision of the KPNX Assignment Manager, Nancy Harrison. If she is not in, you will report Josh Eure, Assistant News Director of KPNX-TV. Following are some of the duties required however, this list could change depending upon special needs: Making beat calls, and setting up stories with the guidance of the KPNX Assignment Manager at the Flagstaff news bureau. Helping producers/reporters set up stories. Bringing in story ideas and promotional ideas for both NAZ Today and KPNX. Answering phones and taking messages for NAZ Today and KPNX crews. Shooting and interviewing stories under the direction of a KPNX or NAZ Today professional staff member. Writing your own stories for NAZ Today news show and website, and possibly KPNX, or for distribution to azcentral.com website depending upon needs of the day. Shooting photos for Facebook and Twitter feeds, and writing posts for both when assigned. Attending some staff meetings. Must provide KPNX Assignment Manager, and NAZ Today Executive Producer with your contact information – email addresses, home address, and cell phone numbers. Also provide emergency contact name and current phone number. Skills/Requirements: Must have own vehicle. Creative and motivated self-starter. Positive attitude with strong journalistic ethics. Must be dependable and show up for your hours. Positive and direct communicator with Nancy Harrison/KPNX Assignment Manager when/if problems arise. Strong writing and video shooting skills. Works as a team member, leave a large ego at home. Must have and maintain a 2.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). Must be a Junior or Senior, majoring in the School of Communication.
