Past class material will be reviewed. All students will take a weekly Anatomy exam. The class will emphasize time management, study skills and strategies, reading skills and critical thinking. Students will learn to identify individual weaknesses and have opportunities to build a stronger foundation. Course Dates: Thursdays August 23, 2012 – December 06, 2012 Course Time: 8:30am – 12:00pm The lead instructor reserves the right to modify the syllabus as needed during the semester. LEARNING OUTCOMES The student will show competency with all anatomy section exams with a 75% minimum. The student will show improvement in test taking strategies and critical thinking skills as reflected in the student’s improved work by the end of the semester. COURSE CREDIT PTHA 1391 has been approved for 3 credit hours PREREQUISITES Departmental approval INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSROOM METHODS Students will do written and oral, individual and group assignments. Students may also do hands on clinical simulation activities. Students will take written and may take lab exams. All material used in this course is designed to challenge the students ability to think critically, problem solve and use their resources to become more efficient with study skills, test preparation, and acquisition of knowledge ultimately for clinical application. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS Due to the nature of this course, the importance of the material for success in this PTA Program and its relevance to clinical performance, students should not miss a class, be tardy or leave early from a class. Refer to Attendance Statement of Commitment for definitions. Calculating the Attendance Grade The attendance grade must be a minimum of 75% to pass this course. The attendance grade begins with 100% attendance – 100 points This attendance grade is based on 15 class meetings. 7 points will be deducted for each tardy, or leaving early 13 points will be deducted for each absence from the 100 attendance points Students are expected to be punctual. Good working habits include arriving 10 – 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled start time of class, returning from breaks promptly and staying for the complete session. Students will be dropped from this course after a second absence, excessive tardies, or an excessive number of times leaving early, or for a combination. See Attendance Statement of Commitment. EXAMINATION POLICIES – ANATOMY EXAMS All anatomy exams will be given at 8:30am per the class calendar. There are a total of 11 exams. All anatomy exams must be passed with a 75% minimum to pass this course. Anatomy exams will be taken in order even if an exam is failed. Exams failed will be retaken at the end of the semester, per the class calendar. Only one retest per exam will be permitted. A maximum of three exams may be retested at the end of the semester. The retests will only be for competency. A student may not fail more than three exams the first time the exams are offered. A student who fails more than three exams will be dismissed from 1391 and receive an F in this course. Any outstanding failed anatomy exams at the end of this course, after the retest date, will result in an F in this course. There will be no time allotted for retests after the last day of class. A student who fails this course must meet with Jan Myers, the Department Chair of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. CLASS WORK POLICY Students must have a minimum grade of 75% in class work to pass this course. Students will begin this course with a 100% class work grade - 100 points Students are expected to be active participants in class. Students who sleep during class, talk on the phone, talk to each other, or handle other business during class, will not be in compliance with the class work policy. 100% class participation is given to each student for each class. Criteria: In class the entire time. Awake and able to respond to questions when asked, whether answered correctly or not Not conducting other business Not talking on the phone Not sleeping Not talking with their classmates Not causing any disturbance Students will lose 7 points from the class work grade and get a written warning for each occurrence of non compliance. The fourth episode will result in an F in this class. The student must meeting with Jan Myers, department chair of the PTA program. A plan of action will be determined HOMEWORK POLICY Students must have a minimum of 75% to pass this course. Students will begin this course with a 100% homework grade – 100 points Students are expected to do all homework individually, promptly, completely and correctly. Students who do not have their homework completed are not prepared to participate in class. Late homework, incomplete assignments, incorrectly done assignments, and assignments that do not earn a 100% will lose 7 points for each assignment from the initial 100 points. A fourth assignment that is not on time, completed correctly will result in an F in this course.
