All requirements for the Ed.D. or Ph.D. degree by a student with an earned master’s degree must be completed
within an eight-year period. The eight years begins with the first semester of doctoral study at NAU. Students who
start a doctoral program with a bachelor’s degree have ten years to complete all requirements for the doctoral
degree. Please review the degree requirement policies: EdD and PhD.
An extension of time to complete degree requirements may be granted, if there are compelling extenuating
circumstances. Extensions may be granted for a variety of reasons, which may include, but are not limited to, job
relocation, military duty, pregnancy, illness, a serious accident, divorces, or other personal tragedies within the
immediate household.

FOR STUDENTS REQUESTING AN EXTENSION OF TIME TO COMPELTE THE DEGREE and/or
CERTIFICATE
Brief Statement of Request (Please attach a separate sheet if necessary):
1. Explain why you did not finish within the allowed time,
2. List a timeline outlining how you plan to complete your degree or certificate (specifying which courses you
will take in which semesters), and
3. Attach a copy of your program of study showing how the proposed extension leads to completion of your
degree or certificate requirement.

4. If a thesis or final project is the only remaining requirement, please include the month and year of each of
the steps required to complete the thesis or project (e.g., For a thesis, the month and year of prospectus
approval, data gathering, when each chapter will be complete, defense, and submission of final copies
should be included).

FOR STUDENTS REQUESTING INCLUSION OF COURSES OUTSIDE THE TIME LIMIT
If courses were taken from other institutions and transferred to NAU, the courses normally must also
have been taken within the six-year period. An exception to this policy can be made with a petition and
this form.

2. Rationale behind requesting and exception for the course to be included in your degree, despite the time
limit rule.
