Briefly describe the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction twice weekly, we begin each class with a 'Q o D'.
2. Set up & Supplies quotations from the different genres (self-management, motivation, etc.) board & notebooks
3. Directions copy the quotation from board, read aloud & discuss meaning/implication of the quote as a group, then write a 2-3 sentence response--- their personal interpretation.
4. Conclusion I read their entries & sometimes ask them to elaborate a bit more and/or to share their entry with the class.
What worked well?
Initially, I provided the quotes on both days, but the interactive response was so positive, with the students themselves bringing in quotes to share, that we decided I would be responsible for Tuesday's quote & they would post one on
Thursdays.
What would you change? Not so much change as add another angle: I would like them to begin exploring the background of some of the individuals whose quotes we use that generate particularly good discussions--I have not been able to incorporate this into our day, timewise or technology wise, since I have only one class computer at my disposal.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? Yes, I think it actually works well as a good warm-up activity for a language arts class; informal brainstorming, sharing ideas, then writing. This is an on-going activity---I will present them with evaluation questions toward the end of the semester---unless you would like me to have them fill it out sooner.
Please describe any student learning outcomes/changes that you observed after the implementation of the activity/strategy. One student researched a favorite new author
(Sherman Alexie) & found a quote from him that she really related to. Others have used the web to find quotes to share-Some write well thought out persuasive essays.
