Briefly describe the activity/strategy, providing enough detail so that a colleague can
replicate the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction To better familiarize students with the services and programs
available to them on campus, I provided the class with a handout listing all
major services and programs and discussed the details of the services in a
PowerPoint presentation. I then had the students break up into groups of 2-3
people to complete the scavenger hunt for services activity. I gave them 15
minutes to fill in their answers on the handout and then we dicsussed the
answers as a class.
2. Set-up & Supplies After delivering the PowerPoint presentation, I talked to the
class about the importance of interdependence amongst classmates and in
using resources on campus. They do not need to memorize where everything
is and what services are offfered. They just need to know where to get that
information -- the catalog and classmates. In groups of 2-3 people, the
students worked on the activity together. Each student had a handout, but they
got the anwers by utilizing the recourses I gave them, as well as discussing the
answers with each other.
3. Directions I advised the students to break up into groups, complete the
worksheet together and to discuess the answers amongst each other. Each
person got 5 points for participation and each person had to fill out an activity
form. Students used their own pencils to write in answers. We then discuessed
the answers in class. No penalty was given for wrong answers.
What worked well? The students responded well to the group work. It was the first time
in the class that I had them complete an assignment together. None of the groups were
loud or roudy (maybe because it was 8:30am), but all of them were chatting and
discussing the answers. When it came time to share the answers with the class, many
of students shouted out their team's answers with certainty. I definitely think the group
work and conversations loosened the students up a bit to share in class. Some students
came up with really great alternatives to the standard student services answers and it
made for a nice exchange of practical information for the class. For example, one
student said that you could get assistance with registeration at the Welcome Center and
another student said, "Ahhhh, good to know." I suggested taking some of the other
Human Development courses for some of the student services answers and students
took down those ideas for future reference.
After the students turned in their group work, I then adminstered a student survey to
assess the effectiveness of the class activity. Overall, the students gave solid, detailed
answers to the questions posed. I adminestered the survey during the third week of
class and 15 students completed it. The following is a summary of the findings:
A. Helped me understand the material/topic = 8 strongly agreed and 7 agreed
B. Increased my interest in the material/topic = 5 strongly agreed and 10 agreed
C. Kept me actively involved in the material/topic = 6 strongly agreed and 9 agreed
D. Helped keep my attention in the material/topic = 7 strongly agreed, 7 agreed and 1
disagree
E. Will contribute to my success as a student in this class = 8 strongly agreed and 7
agreed.
F. I would recommend my teacher use this activity/strategy again = 9 strongly agree and
6 agree.
G. Please comment on your experience with this activity:
I enjoyed this activity, it helped me learn things that I had not known before.
I'm going to keep that paper as a reference while I attend this college.
This activity was helpful to me, because I understand where to go and how to use my
resources.
I enjoyed working in a group.
This actvity is really helpful because it helped me open up to other students as well as
help me recognize the school better. I love this class.
What would you change? I would not change anything about this activity because it was
very effective. I am actually surprised at how well received it was and what the students
had to say about it. They looked like they enjoyed the activity, but the written responses
in the survey were much better than I had anticipated. It makes me think that I should
incorporate more group activities into my class curriculum as a means to engage the
students even more in other lecture material. I will likely do that for the Human
Development 8 course I will be teaching in the Summer of 2011.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? Yes. The students enjoyed
the interaction with each other and in the classroom. The activity also gave me a
chance to plug all the great Human Development courses offered at the school as well
as the expectional services and programs that I am so passionate and honored to be a
part of at CEC.
Please describe any student learning and/or changes that you observed after the
implementation of the activity/strategy. Since the activity was the last thing we completed
for the class period, I did not observe any changes in the student's after the group
activty and survey. However, I do see an increased show of comradery and interaction
among the students during class time. I love it when that happens in my classes.
