El Camino College

Office of the President

Minutes of the College Council Meeting of March 28, 2005

Present: Dr. Fallo, Ms. Caldwell, Dr. Caldwell, Mr. Kelley, Mr. Gomez, Ms. Pickens, Dr.

Simon, Dr. Schwartz, and Ms. Stewart.

1.

Sabbaticals and Early Retirements. In the February 22 nd College Council minutes it was reported that we would recommend faculty teach in Fall rather than Spring to help satisfy our 75/25 requirements. After further investigation it was determined that there is no effect on our requirements and we would not make any such requests to faculty.

2.

Review of College Council Goals a.

Continue Policy Review. We need to set another date for Policy review. Dr.

Caldwell has four outstanding policies. Dr. Schwartz and Mr. Kelley will report back on what policies are outstanding in their areas. The policy roster will also be reviewed to determine which policies can be brought forward. A lot of policies have been posted to the website recently. b.

Review Procedure 2510. Dr. Caldwell will bring copies of the policy and the procedure for College Council to review. c.

Focus on broad issues, but encourage communication on topical issues. It is reported that we are doing good on this goal. People feel free to talk about things that might be localized and occasionally we will stop conversations that become personalized. d.

Focus on Student Success. Committee members are unclear whether or not we are meeting this goal. We do listen to our student representative and most things that occur on campus do affect students in the end. We will develop some objectives and actions that will help us focus more on this goal. Some questions about how student success is measured came up. Is student success measured by course completions, number of graduates, and/or how many students march at graduation? These numbers need to be brought to College Council for further discussion on how student success is measured.

The student representative reports that the President’s Newsletter does provide information about student scholarships, etc. However, he does not feel that we focus on students but rather focus more on faculty and faculty hiring. e.

Build a sense of community. There had been a suggestion to have an event where all employee groups could get together for a social event, such as a picnic. It was reported that there were picnics in the past but they were stopped due to lack of interest. Perhaps picnics could occur every two or three years. Another option mentioned was providing lunch on flex day. An annual golf tournament fundraiser will include the whole campus in the future.

It was reported that there are a lot of year end activities, but it seems that the focus is more on students. Dr. Caldwell will provide a listing of year end activities to

College Council. Perhaps advertising campus activities more widely would satisfy this goal.

f.

Improve campus communication. Finding people on campus is difficult for some. It was reported that the printed phone book was helpful in the past. Alex Kelley will demonstrate how to use the website/portal at the next meeting. A picture directory would also be helpful. The directory could also be on-line and easily updated.

3.

Communication to the public. This topic was brought up by a Board member at a Board meeting. There was a question about how the Board vacancy was advertised. It was reported that local newspapers were given press releases, but each paper has the discretion of whether to publish or not. Board meeting notifications are sent to the Daily Breeze prior to each Board meeting.

The ECCFT representative would like to identify how to get the community more involved in our campus. It was reported that perhaps it is hard because we have so many communities that we represent. It was also reported that we do have a lot of community involvement on Advisory Boards. Our community members also provide mentoring and volunteer services. A volunteer recognition would be a good event to have. Susie Dever reports that the lack of involvement is also prevalent at the city government level.

4.

CEO Role in System Strategic Plan Process. President Fallo will send the March 21, 2005 correspondence received from David Viar. We will discuss this next week so we can participate in the systems strategic plan.

5.

Student Associated Legislative Conference was a success. The main issues lobbied on were Higher Education Act Reauthorization, Fiscal Year 2006 Appropriations and

Textbooks (Publisher Practices). The students met with Senator Boxer, Senator Feinstein, and Congresswoman Harman.

The students are working on a Legislative Reception for April 29 th that will include four

Legislators and 1-3 students from each Academic Division. The students are also working on a fundraiser for April 22 nd to implement the new “Corona Del Camino Society” which will consist of Student Leader Alumni.
