EL CAMINO COLLEGE Office of the Vice President-Academic Affairs SABBATICAL LEAVE COMMITTEE MINUTES 10 November 2005 Present: Dr. Arce, Dr. Rader, Dr. Rapp, Mr. Stanbury, Mr. Way Also Present: Ms. Constantino APPROVAL OF MINUTES – 15 SEPTEMBER 2005 It was the consensus of the committee that the minutes of the 15 September 2005 meeting be approved as written. NUMBER OF SABBATICALS Dr. Arce reviewed that portion of the contract that covers the number of sabbaticals to be awarded and it was reported that two percent of 351 certificated members (includes Faculty, Faculty Coordinators, Counselors, Librarians, Athletic Director, and Nurses) equated to 7.02 sabbaticals. It was noted that the carryover fraction from 2005/2006 (.97) and fractional sabbatical from 2006/2007 (.02) did not equate to an additional sabbatical; therefore, it was determined that there would be seven traditional and seven half-pay sabbaticals. Since there were two or more unused half-pay sabbaticals, an additional traditional sabbatical was added. Total sabbaticals to be issued for 2006/2007 will be eight full-pay and seven half-pay sabbaticals. REVIEW OF SABBATICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE APPLICATIONS – 2006/2007 Full-Pay Sabbaticals: Louis Sinopoli Application for writing of computer software for instructional use tentatively approved pending clarification of whether applicant will program/develop the Clinical Simulation software or use existing software that will allow the coaching and practice of assessment skills in the respiratory care program and other health sciences. Mr. Stanbury agreed to contact Dr. Sinopoli for additional clarification. Eugene Armao Application for formal class work in pursuance of an advanced degree or to increase the applicant’s proficiency in the applicant’s teaching field approved as written. Robert Lewis Committee reviewed and discussed applicant’s proposal for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field. The following comments/concerns were noted: -- Description of study too vague. Applicant should be more specific with regard to the number of colleges/universities he plans to visit. -- Project appears to be curriculum development. One of the responsibilities of teaching, as noted in the Faculty Contract, is to develop curriculum. Past proposals for curriculum development have been denied. -- Applicant needs to outline what it is he is researching; current description is weak. -- Many faculty may experience problems in developing courses and curriculum by not having adequate time to research. This may limit faculty with what they can develop. -- Project appears to be for the good of the department and could be a valid project. -- Proposal would need to include a whole semester of work. Dr. Rapp agreed to contact the applicant to discuss the committee’s following suggestions: -- Applicant needs to be more specific. -- Applicant needs to clarify how extensive the research will be. -- Study should include research as to why other programs are successful and then those tools should be implemented at El Camino. Dale Perinetti After review and discussion of applicant’s proposal for a program of independent study, the following concerns/questions were noted: -- What does applicant intend to do with the project at El Camino? -- How will the sabbatical improve the applicant’s teaching at El Camino? -- Description of study is a little vague. How will it benefit the instructor and department? -- How large is the group that he will survey? Dr. Rader agreed to contact applicant for more clarification. Barbara Jaffe Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. Joyce Dallal Application for a program of independent study for Instructors in fine arts approved as written. Matthew Ebiner Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. Susan Taylor Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. 2 Alternates: Robert Daily (1st Alternate) Committee reviewed application for formal class work but asked that Dr. Daily provide course descriptions from the California Virtual Campus catalog/schedule. Concern was expressed that the Accounting courses he plans to take are encompassed in the minimum qualifications that he is supposed to be able to teach. Michael Botello (2nd Alternate) Application for formal class work in pursuance of an advanced degree or to increase the applicant’s proficiency in the applicant’s teaching field approved as written.
