EL CAMINO COLLEGE Office of the Vice President-Academic Affairs SABBATICAL LEAVE COMMITTEE MINUTES November 9, 2010 Present: R. Daily, T. Fonte, V. Rapp, S. Rodriguez, C. Stanbury NUMBER OF SABBATICALS The committee reviewed that portion of the contract that covers the number of sabbaticals to be awarded and it was reported that two percent of 331 certificated members (includes Faculty, Faculty Coordinators, Counselors, Librarians, Athletic Director, and Nurses) equated to 6.62 sabbaticals. It was noted that the carryover fraction from 2010/2011 (.47) and fractional sabbatical from 2011/2012 (.62) equated to an additional sabbatical; therefore, it was determined that there would be seven traditional and seven half-pay sabbaticals. Since there were two or more unused half-pay sabbaticals, an additional traditional sabbatical was added. Total sabbaticals to be issued for 2011/2012 will be eight full-pay and seven half-pay sabbaticals. REVIEW OF SABBATICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE APPLICATIONS – 2011/2012 Full-Pay Sabbaticals: Susana Prieto Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. Chris Jeffries Application for formal class work in pursuance of an advanced degree or to increase the applicant’s proficiency in the applicant’s teaching field approved as written. Donald Brown Application for formal class work in pursuance of an advanced degree or to increase the applicant’s proficiency in the applicant’s teaching field approved as written, pending confirmation of the number of units to be taken. C. Constantino agreed to contact the applicant. (Note: Applicant was contacted and confirmed that he plans to take six graduate semester units or nine quarter units, all from the list previously submitted. Since there is uncertainty regarding which course offerings will be available in any one quarter or semester, he may request an amendment regarding the choice of graduate school and specific courses. His goal remains on getting appropriate graduate coursework in digitization and updated cataloging. The applicant was informed that the committee, or Dr. Arce on behalf of the committee, would need to approve any revision from his original proposal.) Steve Waterworth Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written, pending receipt of additional information regarding the amount of time estimated to complete the project. The time should be based on a semester load and equivalent to teaching a full load of classes. T. Fonte agreed to contact the applicant. (Note: Applicant was contacted and estimated 300+ hours. He calculates that it will take about an hour to select and read each of 150 articles (or essays) and then an hour to annotate and write up the results for each article.) Lijun Wang Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. Amy Grant Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. Jennifer Montgomery Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written, pending receipt of additional information. S. Rodriguez agreed to contact the applicant. (Note: Applicant was contacted and reported that she plans to develop training tools and resources related to cultural and early literacy for Childhood Education. She plans to share the resources in her classes both at El Camino College and the Compton Education Center. She is interested in making a presentation at a flex day or possible “brown bag” activity in the division. Dr. Gloria Miranda is aware of her request and is supportive of the project.) Sara Blake Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written. Half-pay: Janet Madden Application for formal class work in pursuance of an advanced degree or to increase the applicant’s proficiency in the applicant’s teaching field approved as written, pending clarification of the number of units. C. Constantino will contact the applicant. (Note: Applicant was contacted and verified that she plans to complete a minimum of nine quarter units. On November 14, 2010, J. Madden withdrew from the half-pay sabbatical, but requested to be retained on the list as Alternate #1.) 2 Douglas Glenn The committee felt that the applicant’s project more appropriately fell under category F (program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work). Since the applicant may receive a grant and compensation, he would have to reimburse the College if this occurs. S. Rodriguez will contact the applicant to clarify that he understands that he will not be able to supplement a half-pay sabbatical with the grant. (Note: Applicant was contacted and agreed that his project falls more appropriately under category F--program of independent study.) (Note regarding compensation: Dr. Arce reviewed the Contract, Article XIII, Section 4(h) which states: “Faculty members on a full paid sabbatical whose leave includes working for another employer during the leave period will have the amount of any such compensation deducted from the Faculty member’s pay from the district, except for educational expense stipends and the continuation of pre-existing, part-time employment income.” Therefore, since D. Glenn will be the recipient of a half-pay sabbatical, he would be allowed to also receive payment through the grant.) Alternates: Ellen Antoine Application for a program of independent study in the applicant’s teaching field other than formal class work approved as written, pending receipt of additional information regarding how the study will expand her knowledge in her discipline. V. Rapp agreed to contact the applicant. (Applicant provided the following information: She teaches various classes in Political Science including Introduction to International Relations and Introduction to Comparative Politics. In these classes, she discusses political systems of different countries in a comparative context as well as the relations between nations and the problems that result from the interplay of these factors. Her Independent Study sabbatical will focus on expanding her knowledge of the political, social and economic changes since the end of the Cold War which would include a study and comparison of the results of the Cold War politically on various nations. She will also study the European Union and its original members as compared to the newest members and how they impact the politics and economic interests of the United States. This information will expand her knowledge in the area and would be incorporated directly into her classes here at El Camino College.) Ali Ahmadpour Application for a program of independent study for Instructors in fine arts approved as written, pending clarification that if applicant receives any funding from agencies and/or grant 3 fellowships, he would need to reimburse the College. The applicant will be contacted if he has an opportunity to receive a sabbatical as Alternate #3. 4
