Division Council Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, March 26, 2008
9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Updates
Project Success
 Project Success Opportunity Drawing will be held on April 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the East
Dining Room. Tickets are $5.00 each.
 Awards Dinner will be held on May 15th from 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the East Dining
Room. The guest speaker is Robert McDonald. Tickets are $10.00. Pre-sale is $15.00 at
the door.
 Fieldtrip to UC Irvine will be held on April 4th. EOP&S and FYE students are invited.
 Fieldtrip to CBS Studios to the T.V. taping of the “Late-Late Show” will be on April 9th.
Athletics
 Scholar athletes are being recognized through Scholar-baller acknowledging academic
achievement with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher. Athletics department is promoting the Scholarballer program by offering tutoring on the second floor of the PE building.
 Women’s volleyball team will be nominated for Pepsi Scholarship Award with an
accumulated 3.19 GPA; they also won the state championship.
 Baseball team has 16 scholar-ballers with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher.
 Women’s softball has 4 scholar-ballers.
 Chris Jeffries will be at a convention next week for Commission on Athletics.
 Chris Jeffries and Dr. Smith have discussed hiring athletic counselors to assist with the
overflow. Vera Cheng indicated an interest.
SRC (Special Resource Center)
 SRC is in the process of hiring a Disability Specialist.
 There will be workshop dates for current and new students. Christina Pajo will be placing
workshop flyers in the counselors’ mailboxes.
SEP (Student Enhancement Program)
 Griselda Castro and Maribel Hernandez chaired the Retention Committee meeting
yesterday to review policy procedures for dismissal students for the summer 2008. They
asked John Wagstaff to block students who are in probation level II; and, if it was
possible, to inform students of probationary status by phone as students check their
grades or registration dates. He said he will find out and will let them know. They also
asked John Wagstaff if students could make address changes online through MyECC.
According to John Wagstaff, students can change their address using MyECC; however,
Espe Nieto from Admissions said that this feature is not possible. John Wagstaff will
check on it to determine its limitations.
 New Student Welcome Day meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1st at 12 p.m. in the
East Dining Room.
Adult Re-Entry
 There are currently 48 students in the Adult Re-entry Program.
 A wait list for Fall 2008 will open up and will start on April 1st.

Adult Re-entry has Math and English tutors
Yolanda Dawson is currently working on a demographic report, educational plans, and
retention assessment reports.
Augmentation money was spent.
Appointment Center
 Lisa Perez hired student Greg Brannon for the Appointment Center.
 The Student Services Building will be opened from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during Spring
Break. If the building closes at 4:00 p.m., it was suggested that virtual counseling can be
done from 4:00 p.m. - 4:30p.m.
Carpet
 Dr. Smith will approve the request to measure the carpet area for the faculty and
classified staff offices and will wait for Facilities to provide the cost for the new carpet.
 There is a need to determine who will be here during spring break so that faculty can
move to an empty office while carpet is being installed outside of their office areas.
Career Center
 Region 7 Chancellor’s Office Statewide Advisory Committee: “Technology, Social
Networking, and Beyond,” will be held on Friday, April 25, at ECC Compton Center
from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 29, at Santa Monica College from
8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Flex credit is available and lunch will be provided.
 Van Nguyen is currently working on SLO Assessment.
 Career Center is currently offering classes for career orientation and class presentations
for English 82, English 84, English 1A, English 7, and business classes to discuss career
research and materials.
FYE (First Year Experience)
 Women’s Health Forum is today from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Student Activities
Center
 The goal for fall 2008 is to increase Supplemental Instruction (S.I.) sessions for Math 40
and Math 70; however, Math 12 and Math 23 do not need S.I. sessions since they have
tutors.
 Statistics classes were added this semester for S.I. sessions to help students pass these
classes. These sessions have a huge turn out.
 Irene Gaff conducted a study to compare students who attended S.I. sessions for Math 40
and Math 70 and concluded that 79% of students who attended S.I. sessions passed the
classes, and 49% of students who did not attend S.I. classes did not pass. She was able to
track the data for the last two years.
 The University of Southern California’s Urban Educational Research Department will be
working on a Benchmarking Project. El Camino College, Rio Hondo College, and
Cerritos College will also be working on this project. Barbara Jaffee will be heading the
Benchmark Committee, and is asking for volunteers to be part of this committee.

ECC Planner
 The Division gave copies of ECC Planner report for feedback. It has been edited and
updated back into ECC Planner in order to expedite the process.
 There will be training so that each coordinator will be responsible for updating their area.
 Special programs such as Project Success, Puente, Adult Re-entry, received additional
funding.
 A new process will be coming soon to include institutional goals, accountability report,
seven indicators and core indicators as part of the application process.
 Fund 15 applications have not been finalized.
Budget Cuts
 There is a need to look at an alternate funding for adjunct faculty.
 SARS issues is still in review. Students have the potential to be able to go to portal and
change I.D. numbers. Under no circumstances no one is to share username or passwords
with students.
ACSESS
 ACSESS is a new one-stop center, and the Division is looking for a location for this
center. This one stop center is to be located in the Scholarship office (2nd floor); however,
managers have to go through a bidding process.
 Dr. Smith would like to make sure that ESL (English as a Second Language) students
have the opportunity to be equally successful with ACSESS. For now, she is
recommending for ACSESS to remain in its current format by allowing our capable
bilingual faculty and staff to assist with integrating ACSESS into the ESL student
population. The Division would like basic skills money to fund an ESL One Stop Center,
and is in the process of submitting a proposal.
