Please feel free to contact me concerning any problems that you are experiencing in this
course. You do not need to wait until you have received a poor grade before asking for
my assistance, your performance in my class is very important to me. I am available to
hear your concerns and just to discuss course topics.
PRE-REQUISITE:
Student must have a passing score of at least 81% on the Compass test, complete
documents for TDLR registration, and meet all requirements of HCC enrollment.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an exploration of the basic fundamentals of cosmetology using the advance
techniques of Pivot Point. Theory: Trichology, Salon Ecology, Design Decision, and
Hair Designing. Other topics include sanitation/ preparation and safety for E.P.A.
solutions, bleach, hand sanitizers and common hand washing procedures. Client safety is
a must!
Practical: Manicures/nails and nail disorders, service preparation, shampooing, wet sets,
finger waving, pin curls, and thermal curling. It is designed to teach all phases of form,
designs and implementations for creating a style.
This course is 280 hours of attendance. 4 college credit hours will be earned and can be
applied towards an Associate Degree.
COURSE FOCUS:
This course is based on the skills using electrical devices, cone-shaped rollers and other
up-to-date materials. DVD’s, videos, and other visual aids are used in this course.
Another focus is the ability of the students to comply with the rules and regulations of the
state (TDLR) and HCC based on sanitary and safety procedures used when working on a
live model. Students enrolled in this program must not practice on clients, models, and/or
family members in this college until the student has earned/clocked at least 150 hours of
his/her training ( TDLR).
MANDATORY BOOKS, Equipment/Fees:
Texas Department of licensing and Regulation: $25.00 gift card (due on the first day
of class).
Two (2) photos of your self (due first day of class).
Set of Pivot Point Books and Manuals (2008 edition).

Purchase a full kit from the Barnes and Noble Bookstore (1st Floor) ($380.00).
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to exhibit the following:
Prepare manikin for various draping techniques.
Prepare a manicure table set-up and give basic manicure.
Give a correct shampoo for basic hair services.
Analyze the scalp and hair condition.
Shampoo and rinse the hair.
Apply specialized medicated creams, lotions and conditioners to the hair.
Know the theory to pass exams.
Exhibit the use of cone-shaped rollers
Exhibit the use of making pin curls and finger wave a half of head.
Exhibit the ability to design hair styles by creating a hair style book and drawing the
set patterns of the selected styles.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE:
a. Given the demo by the instructor and guidelines for preparing manikins for
various cosmetic services, the student will drape a model or manikin for wet
sets, dry services, and thermal treatments.
b. Students will learn to interpret and draw styles from looking at photos to
insure their ability to read a hairstyle.
c. Students will give a manicure following all safety and proper procedures.
d. Students will know the Theory and pass all exams.
e. Exhibit all safety and sanitation procedures in compliance with TDLR and
HCC.
TESTING/EXAMINATIONS:
Student cannot make up weekly exams. They will lose points for each missed exam.
Weekly exams may be taken when the instructor assign the date(s). There are make-up
exams for the midterms and finals, ONLY.
The student must notify the instructor at least one week in advance if he/she will not be
able to take the midterm or final exam(s). The test will not be the same as the regular
exam given to the student body for the course. The student will receive an “F” for the
final GPA, if the midterm or final exam is not taken.
LAB REQUIREMENTS:
All the students are expected to apply themselves and stay on their assignments as
instructed. Students understand that this course is a theory and practical subject.
There are weekly test and the student is expected to take all exams (both written
and practical). An “up-do” and braids are part of this course and will be included
in your final exams. The final hair style cannot consist of a “ponytail”.
Students practicing on the lab must monitor their language in relations to cursing
and being professional towards one another. Any student not completing their
criteria for course competencies will be dropped from the course.

GRADING POLICY:
A (90-99) is Excellent= 4 credits
B (80-89) is Good = 3 credits
C (70-79) is Fair= 2 credits
D (60-69) is Passing = 1 credit
F (59-below) is Failing = 0 credits
Must repeat the course
IP (In-Progress) must complete the course.
I (Incomplete) no credit/no repeat
MISSED EXAMS:
Missed exams will result in a 0 score for exam. Only documented emergencies will be
accepted.
ATTENDANCE:
Instructor has the right to drop any student that has 5 or more absences.
STUDENT REQUEST FOR WITHDRAWAL:
It is the student’s responsibility to drop from the course. Students should drop themselves
from the course by contacting the attendance office or e-mailing your instructor about
your intention at: Teresa.Bassett@hccs.edu. Or call Mrs. Bassett at (713) 718-5740.
The state of Texas imposes penalties on students who drop courses excessively. Students
are limited to no more than 6 total course withdrawals THROUGHOUT THEIR
EDUCATIONAL CAREER at a Texas public college or university. HCC has instituted
an “Early Alert” process which your instructor will alert the counselors that you may fail
a class because of excessive absences and/or poor academic performance.
STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, hearing, psychiatric, learning ,
etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the “Disability
Service” office at the Spring Branch HCC campus before completing the enrollment
phase in the Katy cosmetology program at the assigned campus.
The student must receive approval from the Disability office at Spring Branch campus
before starting classes at the Katy campus. If you have any questions please call (713)

INCLEMENT WEATHER:
In the event of severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes, ice storms, or other acts of
nature that create hazardous conditions and/or extended power outages, college officials
may find it necessary to close the college. In this case, students are advised to listen to the
radio/TV for announcements and check your HCC email updates or log on to
wwwSchool-closings.net
INSTRUCTOR NO SHOW:
In the event an instructor does not show, every effort will be made to provide a
substitute instructor. In the event one can’t be found, the class will be rescheduled for
another day near the end of the semester. Mrs. Greene or Mrs. Martinez will be the
instructors to contact gloria.greene@hccs.edu and betty.martinez@hccs.edu
DRESS CODE:
Students must wear black scrubs each day. Regular black attire is not approved for this
program. If a student arrives to class in regular attire (not black scrubs) he/she will not be
allowed to attend and/or stay in class.
PEDAGOGIC DISONESTY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT:
First, and foremost, there will be no cursing in our program. Students are expected to
carry themselves in a professional manner. Loud boisterous conduct will constitute
immediate dismissal from the program.
Second, the instructor will not allow any cheating on quizzes or exams. Any student
found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in conclusion will receive an “F” for the
assignment and the course and will be dropped from the program. See the 2010-2011
HCC Handbooks on academic honesty and dishonesty and disciplinary problems.
