Undergraduate Academic Council Minutes Meeting: Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm Room: LC 3c Present: Jeanette Altarriba, Dave Casey, Karen Chico Hurst, Tony DeBlasi, Rick Fogarty, Sue Freed, Mike Ford, Anne Hildreth, Janell Hobson, Trudi Jacobson, Linda Krzykowski, Kathie Winchester, Jim Zetka Chair’s Report: UAC Minutes from November 13, 2013 were approved by unanimous vote. The proposal to revise the Major in Financial Market Regulation was circulated to UAC prior to the meeting. The School of Business’s proposal for a new Bachelors of Science in Digital Forensics was circulated to UAC prior to the meeting. New Business: Before it came to UAC as a whole, the Interdisciplinary Studies Committee first reviewed the proposed changes to Financial Market Regulation. The proposal changes some requirements, courses, and elective options. It will remain a Faculty-Initiated Interdisciplinary Major. ISC thought the changes were reasonable and supports it. The Associate Dean of General Education also reviewed the proposal and stressed that the proposal is not in depth enough to demonstrate how the new General Education competencies will be met by Fall 2014. It will still be necessary to submit the appropriate documents for that phase to UAC. UAC voted unanimously for this proposal to move forward to the Senate Executive Committee. The proposal for a Bachelor of Science in Digital Forensics is for a restricted, combined major/minor. Overall, the Curriculum Honors Committee supports the Digital Forensics proposal once the School of Business made some requested changes. Unresolved were concerns about students who are “Direct Admits” as freshman and the continuation criteria stipulating students must have a 3.0 GPA in required core courses after the completion of their sophomore year. During the meeting, much discussion centered on these implications and how they differed from current policies toward Direct Admits into the Business Administration and Accounting majors. CHC acknowledged that the proposal addresses “Transfer Pathways” for students looking to enter the program, in the spirit of “seamless transfer” mandates. UAC voted unanimously to accept the proposal’s plan for Direct Admission and for the proposal as a whole to be forwarded to the Senate Executive Committee, after clerical corrections and other small modifications. Anticipated for the next meeting Departments have until December 1 to submit plans for how advanced competencies in their majors will be demonstrated. Discussion will focus on processes and mechanisms to handle this volume of work. This includes the potential for UAC subgroups to split up future duties primarily within the Spring 2014 semester. Next meeting scheduled for December 10th. Meeting adjourned at 4:00 pm.
