Purpose
To describe procedures for the Florida State College’s College Course Challenge Exam (CCCE) Program.
Procedure
A. The College Course Challenge Exam program consists of examinations created by Florida State
College faculty to sufficiently document learning outcomes for awarding course credit upon a
student’s successful completion of the exam. Challenge Exams are only used for courses for which a
national standardized examination does not exist.
B. Challenge Exams are administered in two ways. Exams that lend themselves to written testing are
administered by campus Assessment and Certification Centers similar to national standardized exams.
Assessments that are performance oriented, and require direct faculty observation, are administered by
appropriately credentialed faculty members. Exams for distance learning students may be administered
via remote site testing at approved testing centers and locations globally.
C. Challenge Exams are initiated by faculty and approved by the Vice President of the College. The
College Assessment and Certification Centers will maintain a list of approved exams and exam
expiration dates on its website. Students interested in taking a Challenge Exam may obtain
information from any Campus Assessment and Certification Center.
D. Fees for Challenge Exams are established by the Board of Trustees.
E. Procedures to Establish a Challenge Exam
1. The originating faculty member(s) develops the exam and scoring procedures and submits it to the
appropriate instructional dean using the CCCE New Examination Approval Form, for program
accreditation or other requirements, the faculty member(s) developing the exam may designate that
the exam be administered only to students approved to take the exam by the appropriate program
manager or dean.
2. The Dean notifies faculty members within the appropriate discipline of the proposed new
Challenge Exam and establishes a faculty review period of no less than 10 college working days.
3. During the review period, the Dean makes the new exam available to faculty within the discipline
and considers their input and comments.
4. The Dean signs the new exam approval form verifying that the faculty review process has been
completed and, based upon the faculty input, decides to forward or reject the new Challenge
Exam.
