Thesis Sentence Writing Practice
Power/ Number Thesis Sentences- Power/ number thesis sentences can be short or long; in
fact, they can be any grammatical structure you need or want. A power/ number statement is a
thesis sentence that contains a number word. The number word is the focus of the sentence and
tells the reader that a list of information will follow.
Examples:
Tourists traveling to Rome will want to visit three spectacular sights.
The architect presented several options to the committee.
The new recruits learned four important procedures.
Helpful words for creating a power statement: Two, three, four, several, a number of, a
couple, some, a few, many
Directions: Underline the number statement and circle the topic (what to write about).
1. On Saturdays I enjoy watching several cartoons.
2. In the American School of Warsaw children follow three rules.
3. Ninth graders went on four field trips this year.
4. When I go shopping at the mall, I always buy a new item of clothing from one of my four
favorite stores.
5. The book Wayside School is Falling Down describes many crazy adventures in Ms. Jewel’s
class.
