The Giver Essay
For this assignment, you will plan, write, and revise an essay to answer the following question. You will
be graded according to the state writing rubric and will need to make sure that you write
accordingly.
All of us have to make decisions on our lives. These decisions can be either good ones
or bad ones. Our decisions affect our lives and those of the people we know.
Think of one character in The Giver who has made either a good decision or a bad
decision. In a well-developed, multi-paragraph essay, identify that decision, tell how it
affected that character, and say why the decision was a good one or a bad one. You
may want to consider how the decision affected other characters in positive or
negative ways. You may also want to discuss the consequences of that decision.
Use the back of this paper to plan your essay. Remember that you need to use specific
examples from the story, including at least 2 quotes to support your answer.
