Planning and Budgeting




About 75% of all program plans for the 2012/2013 planning year have been submitted in Plan
Builder. The remaining plans should be submitted within the coming weeks. All were due by
12/31/12.
Governor Brown released his 2012/2013 budget a little early this year. The budget projects a $9.2
billion deficit of which $4.1 billion is carried over from this fiscal year. The Governor is proposing a
temporary sales tax for all and an increased tax for high income earners. His proposal is projected
to go before the voters this November for approval. If it is not approved, he will need to cut $5.4
billion from the budget. He is projecting to cut $4.8 billion from education if the ballot measure
fails.
The Governor is proposing to consolidate nearly all Categorical programs to allow for greater
flexibility at the local level.
The Governor also proposed that Cal Grant GPA requirements be increased; for CCC transfers, the
GPA requirement increases from 2.4 to 2.75.
Assessment/Testing





The Testing Office is in a peak cycle this month due to the on-going Spring 2012 registration
period.
Over the holiday break, Vicki Lockridge received an email from Ron Gordon, now retired, who ran
the testing program at Yuba College. He’s a huge supporter of ACCUPLACER and was responsible
for gathering the data and crunching the numbers to get the test on the Chancellor’s List of
Approved Tests the last time. The current approval expires in July 2012. Mr. Gordon has asked
ECC along with several other junior colleges in California to participate in the gathering of data by
conducting placement examinations and surveys for the re-approval of the Accuplacer placement
tests. The deadline for the collection of data is March 1, 2012. Testing and survey data must be
collected for English, Math, and ESL courses. Each school participating in this process will be given
a small portion of the assignment to complete. The testing will most likely occur in the first week
of the Spring semester.
There are seven Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) exam sessions scheduled for January. The DRP is
administered to prospective Nursing students as a requirement for admission to our Nursing
Program. Both El Camino College Torrance Campus and Compton Center students take the test at
the Torrance Campus.
The Testing Office will administer placement exams to the International Student Program (ISP)
students on January 24, 2011 from 8 A.M. to 1 P.M. in the Humanities Bldg. Room 101. Typically,
there are 40 to 60 foreign students taking the exams for Spring 2012.
The office is progressing well with the purging of old paper records. In the end, paper records will
be maintained for the last 5 years only. Old computer disks, which stored database files of
uploaded scores, rosters, and other records will be destroyed and shredded.

William Guerra officially joined our team on January 3rd.
If any faculty or staff purchased the ASB sticker in the Fall 2011, now is the time to come into the
SDO/ASB office to receive their updated Spring 2012 ASB sticker (free) and enter the ASB drawing
for Spring 2012. Must show Fall 2011 sticker.
In December, ASO put on Finals Madness in the Activities Center East Lounge. There was a large
response - over 50 students attended the first two nights.
Both ASO and ICC will begin preparing for the spring semester activities.
ASO & ICC will be interviewing candidates to fill positions where students have stepped down, due
to ineligibility and schedule conflicts.

Spring Welcome Week will be Monday, February 13 through Friday, February 18. Student
Ambassadors will be stationed at various tables throughout campus providing students with
information and guiding them to their classrooms. Two additional Ambassadors will be walking
around in cap and gowns promoting the intent to graduate form submission deadline.
Testing dates for high schools have been booked. Currently, OASR will be providing placement
testing at: Redondo Union HS, South HS, and Mira Costa HS. Hawthorne will be at ECC, Torrance
and West will also send students to ECC and additional schools will be added to the calendar by
the end of the month.
OASR will host 283 6th grade students from Bud Carson Middle School for campus tours. Details
are still being worked on between the principal of BCMS and Julieta Ortiz.
Outreach event-scheduling will include working with Van Nguyen who has been assigned through
counseling to provide and promote ECC career services that are available to prospective students
at 6 to 8 feeder high schools.
Robin Dreizler, and his co-chair of the SCA SLO committee, Trish Bonacic, have met with the group
and would like to remind everyone that we will be asking for updates shortly, and, a reminder that
ECC will need to ensure it is on task to be at the proficient level of SCA Program SLOs by the end of
this calendar year.
There are 8,880 students currently in our Prospective Student Database. Students who registered
for classes this past fall semester have been purged from the system. Contact Robin Dreizler if
your program wishes use this database for program recruitment.
Our high school contact listserv includes nearly 300 high school counselors and administrators. If
you would like information regarding how to market your program or services by accessing this
