OCTOBER
2013
Assessment/Testing

TESTING NEW STUDENTS - discussions continue regarding the logistics of testing new students between
November 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014. More students may be bussed to campus for assessment,
rather than testing them on-site at their high schools due to the fact that more and more high schools
are getting rid of their computer labs. More dates have been reserved for the Basic Skills Computer Lab
in the Library for testing larger numbers of students; currently, a total of 10 dates have been reserved
for December, January, February, and March.
 TESTING WEBPAGE - still waiting for the Testing web page to be separated from Counseling’s web page.
 TESTING BUDGET - a separate budget for Testing has been established with $80,000 to pay for
ACCUPLACER test units. Will begin to place orders for test units starting around 10/7/13.
 METRICS - 1,722 students were tested in August and 256 students were tested in September.
 PROGRAM REVIEW - work has begun on Program Review for the Assessment/Testing Center, which is
due in March 2014.
 Vice President Nishime feels very strongly about encouraging students to pre-review before testing, so
Testing is trying to think of ways to communicate this to students before they come in to test.
 Staff members Kenya Alvarez and Lorena Garcia, and supervisor Vicki Lockridge attended a Datatel
Training session.
 Elena Savina, the ESL coordinator, is developing a new test preparation handout for ESL students.
Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office is adjusting their student alpha split assignments and re-assigning programs to
the financial aid advisors due to Molly’ s Villalobos’ upcoming retirement and ECC no longer
participating in the Federal Direct Loan program.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) e-mails were sent to approximately 5,000 students.

The last day for students to submit fall 2013 SAP appeal is October 31, 2013.

The financial aid staff is preparing for a retirement party for Molly Villalobos. She has worked at El
Camino College for over 16 years. Details are forthcoming.
Outreach and School Relations

The department’s main focus is still on SB 1456. OASR will have met with all our district high schools by
the November 1st application date, notifying the school contacts of changes to our academic calendar
and timing of the matriculation steps – particularly as those steps relate to offering matriculation
services to the area high schools. The intent is to promote priority registration to all students who
complete the matriculation requirements.

The out-of-state recruitment has begun. El Camino College was represented in Washington DC on
Sunday, September 29th by an El Camino graduate and former Outreach Student Ambassador. Other
out-of-state events include plans to attend fall college fairs in Phoenix, one more in the Washington DC
area, Baltimore, Houston and Las Vegas.

program or services by accessing this listserv, please contact Robin Dreizler or Julieta Ortiz.
