Student Development/ASO/ICC/AGS

Preparations are underway for the 2014 ECC Commencement.

The rain brought to our attention that there are many leaks in our building. The Inter-Club Council
Office is not usable at this time due to water damage. Two ceiling tiles fell and water went into a light
fixture. We are waiting to hear if it is safe for our students to use.
Associated Students Organization
 Students are preparing to attend the American Student Association of Community College (ASACC)
National Student Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. from March 14th to March 19th. At this
conference students will have a chance to meet with legislators and receive training on how to
advocate for students.

On Monday, March 3, 2014, twelve students along with Student Development Director Rebecca Cobb
traveled to Sacramento for the day. They participated in a march at the capitol and met with two
different legislators.

ASO election petitions were made available on February 24th and they are due to the Student
Development Office on March 24th by 1pm.

welcome to attend.
“Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” is a fourhour television series for PBS and international broadcast shot in 10 countries:
Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan,
Liberia and the U.S. Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book, the
documentary series introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most
difficult circumstances imaginable — and fighting bravely to change them. Traveling with
intrepid reporter Nicholas Kristof and A-list celebrity advocates America Ferrera, Diane
Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde, the film reflects viable and sustainable
options for empowerment and offers an actionable blueprint for transformation. For more information,


The Social Justice Fair was held on March 6th from 10am-2pm on the Library Lawn. 45 organizations
participated.
Assessment/Testing



William Garcia conducted Datatel Training in our office on Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Very
informative!!! We will be busy with data entry.
More students are coming in to test and the office is getting busy.
The Assessment/Testing Program Review Report has just been completed and submitted to the dean.
Outreach and School Relations

Outreach is focusing on assigning adjunct counselors to the area high schools to complete educational
plans. The following schools have an assigned Outreach Counselor with regularly scheduled hours: Da
Vinci Design, Da Vinci Science, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Leuzinger, Mira Costa,
Morningside, North Torrance, Redondo Union, Torrance, and West Torrance.

Outreach’s SB 1456 continues to provide testing/assessment to our feeder high schools. Students who
test through Outreach will also receive orientation as part of the required components of priority
registration for in-district students. To date, OASR has already tested more than 711 students and has
completed or scheduled 37 test sessions so far with local high schools both on and off campus.


There are 6,380 students currently in our Prospective Student Database. Contact Robin Dreizler if your
program wishes to use this database for program recruitment.

Our high school contact listserv is approximately 549 high school counselors and administrators and
has been updated for the Spring 2014. If you would like information regarding how to market your
program or services by accessing this listserv, please contact Robin Dreizler or Julieta Ortiz.

Outreach has coordinated a total of 254 events on our calendar as of March 7, 2014. The total number
of events coordinated in 2012-13 was 189 and 171 in 2011-12.
Graduation Initiative

The Graduation Initiative paid for a new software program for the Testing Education Center located in
the Library. The Graduation Initiative wants to do a marketing campaign that focuses on three areas:
high schools, El Camino students and Career and Technical Education (CTE). The program has many
tests which students can benefit from including tests for the GED, SAT, GRE and for career and
technical education.

This year the Graduation Initiative will not plan Hispanic Event activities due to being very busy with
moving other program components forward. But the Graduation Initiative will partner with FYE,
Puente and Counseling for certain events and provide marketing or funding. Graduation Initiative
collaborated by arranging and paying for two guest speakers for the Latino Americans: The 500-Year
Legacy That Shaped a Nation event. FYE also went to the Japanese Museum and the Museum of
Tolerance. Puente also has plans at the end of the year for a guest speaker who will talk about
Hispanics and their struggles.

Summer Math Academy (SMA) will have 14 sections this year - an increase from the previous 8
sections. The goal last year was for 200 students to participate; this year the goal is 400 students.
