Graduation Initiative



The Graduation Initiative is working on recruiting students for the Summer Math Academy.
o The primary mission of the Summer Math Academy 2014 is to equip students with the
information and tools necessary for success in the mathematical sequences of classes they
take at El Camino College to graduate or transfer.
o A secondary goal is to provide students with another opportunity to save semesters taking
non-degree applicable or non-transfer level pre-requisite math classes by scoring higher on
the Mathematics Placement Test (MPT). By making the MPT scores significantly higher for
placement into higher level courses than the general student population, the Academy will
facilitate student success for its students testing into higher level classes.
Idania Reyes will attend the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity’s Annual Professional
Development Institute on April 7-11, 2014. This conference is a professional learning community
where she will learn about successful programs of study that lead to postsecondary transition/transfer,
as well as provide additional resources on how to increase the participation of URM
(underrepresented minority) students, which is one of the primary goals of ECC’s Graduation
Initiative grant. In addition, she will learn about implementing best practices for ensuring the success
of special population students, as well as, participate in the beginning of a series of visioning
activities to create a new future for equity in education which are related to our grant objectives.
April Activities:

A planning committee has been meeting for Academic Awards which will be held on April 16th in
the East Dining Room at 5:30pm.
ASO/ICC will be having a joint Banquet on Saturday, April 26th in the East Dining Room.
ASO will be attending the Student Senate for California Community Colleges Spring General
Assembly May 2nd -May 4th in Los Angeles.
Inter-Club Council
 The Spring ICC Blood Drive was a success. They registered 430 potential donors and collected 339
pints of blood!
 ICC had a great turn out for Warrior Games on Friday, April 4th. It was a fun time of competition
between ECC clubs, emphasizing spirit, pride, unity, and friendship.
Social Justice Program
 On April 24th the documentary Food Inc. will be shown in the Social Justice Center from 5pm-7pm.
Staff members are welcome to attend.
 In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's
food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has
been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our
government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food
supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put
profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American
farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have
bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant
soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new
strains of Ecoli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an
estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with
widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic
level of diabetes among adults.
 On May 1st there will be a presentation in the Social Justice Center titled: “The Perilous Plight of
Refugees: The Refugee Experience and Mental Health.” This presentation will be given by one of
the Psychology Club’s Advisers and faculty member, Dr. Renee Galbavy.
Assessment/Testing



Assessment/Testing is in the process of completing one of their Student Area Outcomes (SAOs), as
the metrics needed for it are now available.
Vicki Lockridge is working to devise a check-list methodology for processing data for the CON
screens, as well as compiling a list of questions for ITS to answer regarding the process.
The Testing Lab XP computers were recently upgraded to Windows 7-compatibility, until they can
be replaced with new ones—perhaps in May. A few kinks have arisen, and they are working with
ITS to correct or alleviate them. There have been printing problems and the online calculator needs
to be disabled.

Assessment/Testing started using a new math flowchart (revised by the Math Division) on 3/17/14.
The Accreditation Report Draft was reviewed by Vicki Lockridge, who found several errors
regarding assessment information. Corrections were forwarded to Dr. Jean Shankweiler.
Testing “exploded” during the month of March, in conjunction with the Student Success deadline of
3/31/14. The office tested a total of 1,519 students, which was 876 more than February 2014 and 851
more than March 2013!

Outreach and School Relations





Through March, Outreach was able to assign Outreach Counselors to 22 high schools. In April, more
high schools, particularly those out of the district, will be assigned Outreach Counselors to complete
educational plans.
Outreach’s SB 1456 efforts to provide testing/assessment to our feeder high schools will surpass
1,000 students having been assessed by April 10. In-district students who test through Outreach are
also receiving orientation credit for priority registration. OASR will have completed 42 test sessions
this spring.
There are 6,432 students currently in our Prospective Student Database. Contact Robin Dreizler if
your program wishes to use this database for program recruitment.
Our high school contact listserv is approximately 555 high school counselors and administrators and
has been updated for the Spring 2014. If you would like information regarding how to market your
program or services by accessing this listserv, please contact Robin Dreizler or Julieta Ortiz.
Applications to become a Student Ambassador for 2014/15 will be available starting April 14th.

 The Enrollment Services Division office staff maintains job information for the ECC Job Website
database to provide students and alumni opportunities to apply for full- and part-time positions available
both locally and out of the area. Currently, there are over 80 positions listed. Jobs remain on the website
for 30 days unless extended by employers or positions are filled. Students need to log in to MyECC using
their student ID numbers. On the main page, there are several “Need A Job” links that will take them to
the job listings.
SCA Area Council – April 8, 2014





Accreditation Update – The Accreditation Forum was held on March 27th. No new input for the 2014
Institutional Self-Study draft from those who attended but comments/changes are being sent to the
Accreditation Co-Chairs. The edits will be completed this month; Cabinet will review the self-study
in May which will go before the Board in June.
Nursing Program Update – The ECC Nursing program will withdraw from the Accreditation
Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accreditation process at this time to address and
resolve the recommendations needed to meet ACEN standards. ACEN accreditation is optional not
mandatory. The disadvantage is that nursing students will not be able to work in federal institutions
without ACEN accreditation.
New Computers – Browsers on the new computers do not interface with OmniUpdate. As a short
term fix, ITS will install Google Chrome on one computer per office until Omni finds a way to work
with the new version of Windows Explorer or if we switch to another web page vendor.
Proposed Student Activities Fee – Starting spring 2015, students will automatically be charged a
$10.00 activities fee when they apply, but will be given the option to opt out of paying the fee.
Students voted to charge this fee – contributions from the Bookstore to the Auxiliary Fund have
decreased by 50%. The fee will undergo strict guidelines and policies and procedures on how it is to
be managed will be developed. Fees will be used for services that directly benefit students.
Compton Center Update – Still in the process of hiring a Dean of Student Services. Trish Bonacic
will become the Interim Dean (to replace Margaret Ramey who is scheduled to leave in April) until a
new person is hired.
Team Reports:
 Admissions & Records - The evaluators have been swamped with petitions. A&R is still trying to
recover from the loss of Dave Snowden.
 Counseling – Forty-seven schools will participate at the University Fair on April 10th from 10am-1pm
on the Library Lawn. Upcoming tours are scheduled to Cal State University Fullerton, University of
Santa Barbara and Inglewood Court. A resume writing workshop is scheduled on April 9th.
Applications are being reviewed for two open counseling positions. Counselors are conducting
workshops at the high schools, providing orientation and education plans and informing students they
must take the assessment test.
