ICC Club Officers and Advisers orientation was held on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 9:30am-12:00pm. Many
clubs attended and workshops covered six different topics: Event Planning, How to Run an Effective Meeting,
Club Finances, Club Activation, How to Plan an Excursion, and Student Success Strategies.
Student Development Office is hosting a seminar entitled: “Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C):
Human Rights Violation or Cultural Right?” This will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 from 1:00pm2:00pm in the Distance Education Room. The presenter is Dr. Rene Galbavy, ECC Psychology instructor.
Overview: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (sometimes referred to as female circumcision) involves partial
or total removal of the external female genitalia, and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human
rights of girls and women. According the World Health Organization and other United Nations agencies,
FGM/C constitutes an extreme form of discrimination that “…violates the rights to health, security and
physical integrity of the person, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment,
and the right to life when the procedure results in death.” However, defenders argue that the practice
reflects individual cultural traditions/values, and that groups which support and encourage the practice have
a fundamental right to do so. This talk will focus on: defining FGC/M; where, by whom, and why it is
practiced; the physical, psychological, and social consequences; and the local and international response.
ASO and ICC will be attending the annual California Community College Student Affairs Association (CCCSAA)
conference which will be held in Los Angeles from October 17 -19, 2014.
ICC Blood Drive will be held October 21, 2014 (9:00am-3:30pm), October 22, 2014 (10:00am-7:00pm), and
October 23, 2014 (9am-3:30pm) in the East Lounge, Activities Center. Appointments can be made by going to
www.donatebloodcedars.org.
ASO will be collaborating with Project Success to host a Proposition Party on Friday, October 24, 2014 from
1:30pm-3:30pm in the East Lounge, Activities Center. This gives students a chance to educate each other and
discuss the propositions that will be on the coming election ballot (this event is still pending approval).
ASO is planning for a Halloween Maze in the South Lounge, Activities Center on October 28th from12:20pm2:00pm (this event is still pending approval).
