EL CAMINO COLLEGE Office of the Vice President – Academic Affairs NOTES – 25 FEBRUARY 2008 Assessment of Learning Committee (ALC) Attendees: K. Clark, C. Gold, D. Goldberg, I. Graff, O. Hadley, L. Kjeseth, D. Maruyama, J. Simon, A. Spor, H. Storms, C. Striepe, D. Thompson I. Membership It was noted the following areas will need a representative: Student Services - Linda Gallucci has stepped down due to her new position as Interim Dean – Community Advancement. Humanities – M. Kline has stepped down due to Academic Senate responsibilities. Math – J. Kasabian teaches at the time ALC meets. II. Revisiting the Assessment Principles #6 principle was reviewed by the committee with the following changes: OLD: Assessments are used to evaluate student learning: Results of assessments of student learning outcomes will not be used in performance evaluation in any punitive manner. Student learning outcomes will not be used to undermine academic freedom. NEW: Assessments are used to evaluate and improve student learning: Information gleaned from assessment cycles is used primarily to understand the factors affecting student learning and to improve instruction and services. Assessments of student learning outcomes are not used to undermine academic freedom. L. Kjeseth will email the final revision to all committee members for one final review before forwarding to Academic Senate for ratification. It was also noted that the mission statement was incorrect. A. Spor will forward the current mission statement to L. Kjeseth. III. Assessment of Student Learning Week Assessment Learning Week is scheduled March 24-28. Committee members were asked whether the ALC fair should remain in the same format as last semester or changed. Possible suggestions for a different format include: (1) division fairs; (2) fair in different locations around the campus, but not limited to a specific division. The main objective of the fairs is to learn what other divisions are doing and provide models for the development of outcomes and assessments. One goal for the spring semester is to make the SLO submission process web based rather than email based so once a SLO is created and entered, it will be in a database format to create reports. L. Kjeseth will work with those who wish to put the SLO Assessment Report form on Portal. A subcommittee consisting of J. Simon, I. Graff, L. Kjeseth and a representative from ITS will meet to look at the database, what to build into it, and how to roll it out. 1 V. Presentation of Fall 2007 Final Report The end of the semester report as of fall 2007 was distributed. Committee members were requested to review their division report for accuracy. Any changes can be directed to L. Kjeseth and J. Simon. VI. Other The upcoming Strengthening Student Success conference is requesting proposals to be presented. J. Simon referred committee members to the website www.rpgroup.org for further information. 2
