College Senate: Minutes Date: 01/21/2015 Location: Allied Health Bldg., Room 4501 Minutes Approved: __X_Yes ___No (Changes: ) Visit the College Senate website at http://www1.cpcc.edu/senate/ for the College Senate minutes, SharePoints (items for open discussion), and information about NCCCFA, Senate bylaws, Senate membership, committees, forms, etc. President’s Report: Minutes from the November senate meeting were approved. Concern has been raised over homeless individuals sleeping in buildings on Central Campus. Security is aware and on the lookout, and procedures are in place for cleaning crew to notify security so extra checks will occur before buildings are locked for the evening. Faculty questioned why COD entry is so early—suggestion was made to bring this up with new assistant to VP. Efforts will be made to determine what is driving early need for COD entries. Richard Zollinger will be at the next Senate meeting in February. Committee Reports: 1. President-elect (Alison Gagan): Alison introduced Mark Coltrain, new Senate Parliamentarian. 2. Academic Policies (Pam McIntyre): Current CPCC residency requirements are 21 semester credit hours for degree students. This requirement means that students in AAS degrees can complete all general education requirements (18 sch) plus 3 program hours and earn a degree from CPCC. For programs with voluntary accreditation, this means that students earn a degree from CPCC’s accredited program but have only completed 3 sch (one class) at CPCC in the accredited program area. Let Pam know if you have similar concerns or if this applies to your area. One other issue is resources for ELL students whose pronunciation may hamper job possibilities. Pam shared resources (Memrise, Pronunciator, Mango). Mango and Pronunciator are available on the library website. Academic ESL is available but many students elect to bypass that, with negative impacts on academic performance. Several avenues for sharing information about Academic ESL (prefix EFL) are being explored (advising, FYE, etc.). 3. Credentials (): No report 4. Curriculum (Pat West): Please see attached handout. 5. Educational Resources (Roschella Stephens): Report given by Joel Moore. The additional $5000 received this year is gone; there will be no additional funds. 6. Faculty Welfare (Fred Tone): Fred provided a history of the PDP and faculty welfare (FW) committees and their relationship. The PDP committee was formed in Spring 2014 and included few faculty, who were dropped from the committee over the summer. Division Directors (DD’s) developed changes and presented to Senate Faculty Welfare committee. The end result is that faculty and DD’s will meet in late January to come to consensus on at least one area (teaching effectiveness). FW will come up with changes to present to Committee. FW met and came up with changes to categories (proficient and advanced), changed wording. FW will meet again immediately after this senate meeting to discuss. Notes from FW committee will be posted on senate website; email Fred if you want a copy. The goal is to remove subjectivity and level the differences across divisions. DD training is also included. All senators are invited to attend the FW meeting. The salary study should be completed by summer. Any changes should be made within a 1-2 year time change. Since 2008-09 no changes have been made to salary ranges. Overall ranges for faculty, staff and admin will be considered. Loads will not be reconsidered. 7. Professional Staff Welfare (Tony Hayes and Denise Keating): Denise reported that we are still waiting on a decision about the Veterans’ Day holiday (Administration has not responded). Currently, CPCC’s nondiscrimination policies for admissions and hiring do not include sexual orientation or gender identity as a protected class. Policies including LGBT protections are already in place at area colleges, universities and various community partners. A resolution to add LGBT protections to the College’s nondiscrimination policies will be presented at the next full senate meeting. 8. Student Welfare (Tony Beatty): Student Welfare committee met immediately before Senate meeting. Will continue to meet prior to senate. Plans are underway to train instructors to provide a “safe place” for LGBTQ students, with a sticker to put on faculty offices to readily identify those safe places. Student representatives will start meeting with SW committee. 9. Technology (Kathy Watkins): Kathy and Mark Coltrain shared the results of the technology survey from Fall 2014. They reviewed a Powerpoint presentation that can be located on the Senate Website. (http://www.cpcc.edu/senate/notable-documents/Faculty%20Technology%20Survey%20%20Fall%202014.pdf/view ) Brief overview of findings: The survey went to PT and FT faculty (FT faculty had a 40% response rate). Mostly curriculum faculty responded; half taught OL and HY; 80% traditional. The PT response rate was less than 10%. WebEx is not widely used; Senate may need to make recommendations about its use. eLocker, Blogs, Prezi, NetOp, Google plus, ePortfolio, Respondus, Clickers, were also not used. 3rd party resources are widely used. Additional training was requested for infrequently used tools. Moodle users were overrepresented in survey responses (17% vs. less than 10% actual) Mark Coltrain shared results from survey about course template. Students will be surveyed next. No changes will be made until all results are in. A question was raised about why course template was applied to HY and TR classes in addition to OL (it is required only for OL). Suggestions for improvement were addition of a tab Db, allowing for individual flexibility, addition of announcement page, fewer layers to click through. Changes may be made for Fall 2015, depending on results from student survey. Suggestion was made that Feedback should be sought on changes/revisions before they are applied. Surveys will be used as benchmarks; will be distributed each fall for feedback. Kathy also shared that there will be changes to the online attendance system. Specifically, faculty can change preferences to allow for whole-class population of attendance without a pop-up reminder. Additional expected changes to options for attendance are weekly shading and color coding for different options (A/T/P). Training will follow. Scrolling cannot happen due to technology limitations, but other changes will likely occur. Suggestion was made to include enhance color coding (without violating ADA compliance for individuals who are color blind). A QEP-STAR recommendation is to reorder options on the report/intervention (campus choice higher). Kathy reports that there is no “naughty list” for faculty who didn’t do STAR reports. Lynda.com no longer available to students—currently not in service due to subscription renewal questions. Waiting on state office for approval. Email went to DD’s about this. Other: Lisa Godwin asked Senators to make corrections to the list of senators by Division, in an effort to generate a list of existing senators and unfilled seats. Move to adjourn. Next Meeting Time: 3rd Tuesday of the month (2:30): Location: Allied Health Bldg., Room 4510 Respectfully submitted, Lisa Godwin Secretary Curriculum Committee Senate Handout January 2015 Meeting (From November & December C.
