Title of Book: Author: Publisher/Year: ISBN: Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef Marianne Berkes Dawn Publications/2004 1-58469-082-8 Grade Levels for Recommended Use: Kindergarten TEKS: (1)(B)(C) The student uses numbers to name quantities. The student is expected to use sets of concrete objects to represent quantities given in verbal or written form and use numbers to describe how many objects are in a set using verbal and symbolic descriptions. Brief Summary: The coral reef is a marine nursery alive with adults and their young. Count the young, from one to ten, as you turn the pages. Materials Needed: 1-preassembled book (3 sheets of construction paper folded horizontally with a stapled spine), 1-title page, 1-age appropriate magazine, scissors, and glue per student Suggested Activity: My Counting Book. After reading Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef, distribute supplies to students. Tell students they will be creating their own counting books; create a counting book ahead of time for the students to model or use Over in the Ocean as a model (each page has the numbers, one through ten, and corresponding sea stars). Have students write their names on their title page and glue it to the front of the book. Have students find the number 1 in their magazine; have them cut it out and glue at the top of the page inside the front cover. Next have the students cut out any one item from their magazine and glue it on the same page so that page one is complete. Next have the students find the number two in their magazines, cut it out, and glue it on the next page. Then have the students cut out two of the same item and glue them on the same page as the number two. Repeat the process with numbers three through ten (the back cover should be the only blank page). As an extension, students may write the words of the numbers at the bottom of the pages. Adapted by: Stephanie R. Medina (2011)
