We will read 5 major literary works per this year, including plays, novels, and nonfiction works. Students will construct persuasive and reflective essays, discuss ideas and topics relevant to current events, and practice public speaking and presentation skills. We will also practice grammar, usage, and mechanics and literary analysis as preparation for the Oklahoma End of Instruction (EOI) exams. Note: Students will write research papers during the first 6 weeks of the spring semester (January-February). Students will need access to a working printer and a method for transferring documents (flash drive, email account) by the beginning of the spring semester. Students have access to printers at the school library before and after school or during lunch time. The Moore Public Library is another great resource when students need computer or printer access. Course Objectives English II is designed to correlate with the Oklahoma Language Arts Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) and the Moore Public Schools English Curriculum Guide. The ultimate goals, however, are to prepare students to excel in any career, give them practical tools to evaluate their world, increase their confidence in expressing their ideas, and enable them to live full, rich lives. Absences, Late and Make-up Work Students who are absent more than 10.5 days each semester cannot receive credit for the course. Students must be in the classroom at the bell to avoid an unexcused tardy. Two tardies constitute an absence. Any student who misses more than 5 minutes of class will be counted absent. Late work will be docked 10% per day late, excluding weekends or school holidays. Make-up work for exempt absences (see student handbook) may earn full credit. The number of days allowed to make up missed assignments will be equal to the number of days absent. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for and complete any work missed during an absence. Cheating or Plagiarism Any assignment or test completed by fraudulent means will receive a zero and may result in disciplinary action. Identical papers will not be accepted. Extra Credit Students may earn extra credit up to five percent of the total course points. Take advantage of these opportunities as they arise during the semester. Extra credit is not offered at the last minute. Disabilities Reasonable accommodations will be made for any student with disabilities. Final Note English II is designed to provoke thoughtful discussion. We will explore what we think, what we believe, and what others believe, and come to better understand ourselves and our world. ___________________________________________________ Parent Signature ______________________ Date Parents are encouraged to track student grades using the online Parent Portal.
