The Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement Program (MESA) is located in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center. The MESA/STEM Center provides resources and services for students pursuing calculus-based mathematics, engineering, and science degrees with the intention of transferring to a four-year university. Academic support services include Academic Excellence Workshops, group study sessions and tutoring in core chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics subjects only. The program also offers specialized STEM counselors who can assist in educational planning, career counseling, and resources for scholarships, internships and employment. The Writing Center provides drop-in tutoring for students who need help with writing. For students who have completed an outline or a rough draft, we look at structure and content. For students who need help understanding their topics, we offer prewriting conferences, brainstorming and organizing possible approaches. Finally, we provide tutorials in grammar, proper formatting (APA and MLA), and specialized writing tasks, such as application essays and cover letters. Learning Resources Center (LRC) provides tutoring on a drop-in basis for a variety of subjects. Tutors help students with discipline specific academic skills such as understanding assignments, developing essays, preparing for exams, and improving study techniques. All tutors receive training and are certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. The Reading Success Center (RSC) is designed to support all ECC students with their reading comprehension assignments and reading skills. The RSC provides drop-in. one-on-one tutoring, computers and reading software, supplemental worksheets and activities, and study spaces. In addition, the RSC houses the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program, which pairs mentors with reading courses to lead study sessions outside of class. Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) offers drop-in individual tutoring sessions for students who participate in the EOPS/CalWORKs/CARE program. The tutorial staff specializes in remedial math and English but also offers assistance in a wide variety of subjects including biology, chemistry, anatomy, psychology, sociology and more. The program offers peer advising and academic counselors who can assist in educational planning and career counseling. EOPS students receive book vouchers. Supplemental Instruction offers a series of weekly peer-led review sessions for students enrolled in selected courses. The SI method has been proven to help increase student understanding of course material and raise grades. Students have an opportunity to compare notes, discuss important concepts, and take practice tests before taking the graded exam. Students will also increase their strategies for test-taking, studying, and learning.
