Henry II and
Thomas Becket
were friends and
in 1162 Henry
appointed Becket
as Archbishop of
Canterbury. Henry
thought Becket
would help control
the power of the
Medieval Church.

Thomas Becket changed
when he became
Archbishop and started
to live a very religious
life. He spent much of
his time praying.

Becket refused to
do anything about
the Church courts
where clergy who
were on trial
usually got much
lighter sentence
than from the
royal courts.
Becket, fearing for
his safety, fled to
France.

In 1170 Becket and Henry patched up their quarrel and
Becket returned to England. However, he then made
things worse again by punishing the Bishops who had
supported the King in the earlier quarrel.

Henry was so angry when
he heard of Becket’s
actions that he flew into a
rage and uttered the words
‘Will no one rid me of this
troublesome priest?’
4 knights, loyal to the King,
heard this and set off for
Canterbury where they
murdered Becket in the
Cathedral.
