APPROVAL OF MINUTES
W. Killingsworth moved that the minutes of the September 14, 2004, College Curriculum
Committee meeting be approved as written and P. Gebert seconded the motion.
CHAIR’S REPORT
J. Young reminded the committee that at its last meeting, Academic Senate President
J. Stewart informed the CCC it will be involved with the development of student learning
outcomes this academic year. Chair Young then notified the CCC that the interim
President of Modesto College, B. Scroggins, will be on campus November 5th to discuss
student learning outcomes with faculty, administrators, and staff. B. Scroggins is a noted
expert in this field and should provide El Camino College with valuable guidance.
J. Young asked CCC members to attend this session if at all possible.
VICE PRESIDENT - ACADEMIC AFFAIRS' REPORT
The interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, J. Schwartz, said he looked forward to
working with the CCC then commended committee members for the time and effort they
devote to curriculum. The Vice President stated that he believed the CCC and the division
curriculum committees were the most important committees on campus then thanked
J. Young and A. Collette for their help and tireless efforts.
J. Schwartz reminded everyone that student learning outcomes were part of the new
accreditation requirements and said he recognized that training was necessary in order for
faculty to develop measurable and meaningful outcomes. He reported that a Student

Learning Outcomes Task Force was being formed and encouraged CCC members to
volunteer for this task force. Vice President Schwartz continued, saying that the core
group of the task force, which consisted of him, A. Collette, B. Perez, J. Stewart, and
J. Young, would be increased to include two faculty members from each division.
J. Schwartz remarked that he and J. Stewart sent a memorandum to the academic deans in
which they requested volunteers for the task force. The memorandum also stated it would
be beneficial if the volunteers were either members of the CCC or division curriculum
committees. The Vice President and the Academic Senate President believe the task force
would benefit from the expertise of faculty who know curriculum processes. J. Young
then told the committee that a copy of the memorandum regarding the task force was in the
day’s packet and encouraged everyone to read it.
COURSE DISCIPLINES LIST
Each CCC representative received a copy of the 2004-2005 Course Disciplines List and
J. Young asked that this list be referred to when reviewing curriculum as it is the CCC’s
responsibility to determine if the appropriate discipline is assigned to a course. The Chair
then said that each academic dean will also receive a copy of the list.
CURRICULUM REVIEW
FINE ARTS PROPOSALS:
After Chair Young informed the division it would have 15 minutes to present its proposals,
T. Lew distributed an errata sheet for the seven independent study proposals scheduled for
review. The dean told the committee that the revisions on the errata sheet for Art 99abc,
which included slight modifications to Sections II and VI of the course outline, also
represented the revisions necessary for Dance 99abc, Film/Video 99abc, Music 99abc,
Photography 99abc, Speech Communication 99abc, and Theatre 99abc. In addition to
these changes, the disciplines originally listed on the proposals for the Film/Video,
Photography, Speech Communication, and Theatre independent study courses were
incorrect. T. Lew then provided the committee with the correct disciplines. As there were
no questions regarding the proposals, J. Young remarked that the ease of reviewing these
proposals reflected the CCC’s hard work last year when it developed a prototype outline
for independent study courses. C. Striepe then moved that the Fine Arts proposals be
approved as revised. P. Gebert seconded the motion, which carried. W. Killingsworth
moved, and P. Gebert seconded, that the conditions of enrollment be approved. The
motion carried.
HUMANITIES PROPOSALS:
Chair Young introduced Acting Dean B. Villalobos then stated the division would have 10
minutes to present its two proposals.
B. Villalobos began her presentation by apologizing for submitting incorrect proposal
forms to the committee. She then distributed revised forms and revised course outline
pages for Chinese 99abc and Spanish 99abc. The revisions provided the committee with
correct catalog descriptions. There were no questions regarding these independent study
proposals so P. Gebert moved, and S. Dowden seconded, that the Humanities proposals, be

approved. The motion carried. W. Killingsworth then moved that the conditions of
enrollment be approved. C. Striepe seconded the motion, which carried.
INDUSTRY AND TECHNOLOGY PROPOSALS:
Chair Young announced the division would have 10 minutes for its presentation then
R. Way asked the CCC to begin its review with Air Conditioning and Refrigeration 21.
The dean provided minor edits and a slight revision for Section V of the course outline
before asking for questions. As there were none, the committee turned to the proposal for
Automotive Collision Repair/Painting 1A. During the discussion of this course, the note
accompanying the catalog description was revised to indicate the credit limitation.
W. Killingsworth then moved that the two Industry and Technology proposals be
approved. S. Dowden seconded the motion, which carried. P. Gebert moved, and
W. Killingsworth seconded, that the conditions of enrollment be approved. The motion
carried.
NATURAL SCIENCES PROPOSAL:
Chair Young informed the committee that the History of Science 11 proposal had been
tabled due to problems with the course outline template. She said the course is now
scheduled for review at the October 26th CCC meeting and that everyone would be
receiving new copies of this proposal. A. Collette asked members to forward
any corrections or revisions they may have for the proposal to W. Killingsworth.
HEALTH SCIENCES AND ATHLETICS PROPOSALS:
Acting Dean L. Aborn introduced D. Shannon to the committee then stated that
D. Shannon would lead the review since he had worked closely with faculty to develop the
division’s proposals. D. Shannon began by thanking CCC members for the helpful
comments they forwarded to Chair Young then asked that review begin with Physical
Education 20ab, Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Team. He referred members to
the division’s errata sheet, included in the day’s packet, and during the ensuing discussion
he noted revisions made to the catalog description and to Sections II, IV, V, and VI of the
course outline. Next, the committee discussed Physical Education 21abc, Off-Season
Training for Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Team. Revisions were accepted for
the catalog description note and for Sections II, IV, and VI of the outline. D. Shannon then
advised the committee that the revisions agreed to for Physical Education 20ab and 21abc
were also the revisions necessary for Physical Education 25ab, Men’s Intercollegiate Cross
Country Team and Physical Education 26abc, Off-Season Training for Men’s
Intercollegiate Cross Country Team. The CCC then turned to Physical Education 125ab,
Women’s Intercollegiate Swimming Team. After D. Shannon explained revisions to the
catalog description and to Sections II, IV, V, and VI of the course outline,
W. Killingsworth questioned one of the assignments in Section V. The committee then
worked with the division to develop an assignment that better reflected critical thinking.
When review of the proposals concluded, W. Killingsworth moved that Physical Education
20ab, 21abc, 25ab, 26abc, and 125ab be approved as revised. P. Gebert seconded the
motion, which carried. P. Gebert then moved, and W. Killingsworth seconded, that the
conditions of enrollment be approved. The motion carried.
CCC MINUTES 09/28/04
4
Chair Young remarked that curriculum review moved rapidly today primarily because the
divisions presenting curriculum did an outstanding job in providing the CCC with welldesigned and well-edited proposals.
At 3:15 p.m., S. Dowden moved, and W. Killingsworth seconded, that the meeting be
adjourned. The motion carried.
