Group Analysis Exercise—English 1A, Dr. Leiby Part I. For this exercise, you will work with two or three other students (preferably, forming groups of three) who have been assigned the same essay to analyze for Analysis Exercise #1. Work together by comparing the responses you provided on Analysis Exercise #1. Do you agree or disagree and why? Try to come to an agreement on those responses, choosing the best ones in order to begin brainstorming for an essay that begins with the following thesis statement: In her essay, “__________,” the author ___________ utilizes effective ethos, logos, and pathos to convince her audience, _____________, of her claim that ________________________________. For this exercise, fill in the blanks in the thesis statement above, as well write the following: Topic sentence on ethos for body paragraph #1: Topic sentence on logos for body paragraph #2: Topic sentence on pathos for body paragraph #3 Part II. Optional but recommended: If time allows, after each topic sentence, include at least one quoted / paraphrased passage from the essay (use your Analysis Exercise #1) as support, and utilizing the sandwiching method we discussed in class, set up and provide commentary on the quoted and paraphrased material you use to support the topic sentence (that is, include a “top bun” and a “bottom bun”). Write one “quotation sandwich” for each topic sentence first, then if you still have time remaining, go back and include more quotation sandwiches (other examples as support) under each topic sentence. Remember that brackets and ellipses can be employed to make quoted material flow with your prose and that you can use a combination of quotation and paraphrase, even in the same sentence. Requirements for Parts I and II: Use MLA format for the assignment, including correct margins, a heading and header (with all students’ names), as well as putting the page numbers of the quotations or paraphrases in parentheses and punctuating these properly. (Remember: punctuation such as a period goes after the parentheses for correct MLA format.) Proofread for grammar and style before printing the assignment. Print out one copy for each student in the group and one copy for the instructor (and save a copy onto each student’s flash drive). Bring your copy of the assignment and your flash drive to the next class, as well as your textbooks, and be prepared to work on drafting the Group Analysis Essay (Essay #1). I suggest that before the end of class today, you agree on which student will be responsible for which part of the Essay #1 draft, as the more drafting you do outside of class, the more you will be able to accomplish in class.
