That this takes effect for the Fall 2012 semester. 2. That this proposal be forwarded to President George M. Philip for approval. 401287953 Page 2 of 4 March 20, 2012 To Whom It May Concern: This cover letter explains the Department of Chemistry's proposal for the additional requirement of a three-credit advanced chemistry laboratory course for our B.S. Chemistry, Chemical Biology Emphasis. While our B.S. Chemistry, Chemistry Emphasis (general program) has long been certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and our two Forensics Emphases have recently been certified, the Chemical Biology Emphasis currently lacks sufficient advanced laboratory hours to be certified. It is our desire to have all of our B.S. degree programs to be certified by ACS, hence this proposal. The Chemical Biology Emphasis was originally proposed and approved several years ago with a total of 68 credits. At that time, we had some difficulty in getting approval at that level of credits, which was more than the usual 66 credits; thus, we did not incorporate the "extra" lab course, which would have raised the total to an even higher 71 credits. In the interim, we have gained University approval for our Comprehensive Forensics Emphasis (82 credits); there are other degree programs, notably in the Nano School, that require even higher numbers of credits. Thus, this seemed to be an auspicious time to propose this small addition to the Chemical Biology track, so that it will be able to be certified by ACS when our programs are evaluated again in the next couple of years. We note that we have an accompanying course action that has been submitted in order to develop an Honors B.S. Chemistry degree with Chemical Biology Emphasis. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
