Business Meeting notes from Council Breakfast Meeting: Positive attendance at advisory council reception Early arrival worked well – schedule for 5:00 next year Make an effort to make the experience more positive for our attendees – provide a small report for them to leave with – budget brochure? Alumni Luncheon confused legislators! They were uncertain what to attend – the luncheon or the reception Making progress with legislators, would like to make more touches – take home materials, local meetings – Council would like to focus efforts in this area Thoughts of CAES update reports – excited about new talents coming in Building removal positive, but the process seems ridiculous to many of the council members All concerned about raises for staff – believe this is a major issue They are concerned about staff moral as well What can they do – is there something they can do in Athens to show appreciation to staff o How many staff members does this include? What can we do to show appreciation? Award recognition – positive – is this something the council could do for faculty and staff? Land grant systems – need some clarification on the different years but understand that UGA is unique and aren’t sure others understand this, especially our regents and legislators o The mission of teaching, research and extension is so unique – but do not believe others understand the uniqueness of the land grant mission Council wants to encourage Dean Angle on personal level – they admire how he is balancing personal and professional obligations Question – we can hire people but we cannot take care of buildings? Do not understand the different pots of funding and politics involved Is there something the Council needs to do to help educate the Board of Regents? How do we get word to the Regents through the different levels of bureaucracy – do not want to jeopardize the college by going around levels and would like to use personal relationships is appropriate Formula funding a mystery – impact of student performance and research performances Strategy for M&O Funding – whatever the Council can do to assist, just let them know, most seems to be internal situations that the Dean will have to manage with Sr. Administration Council would like to encourage partnerships with new College of Engineering, etc. – happy to see partnership with GA Tech Buddy will continue to work on visiting with President Morehead August 26-28 works the best for the August meeting February 3-5, 2015 are the next Atlanta meeting dates Celebration of Staff at the August Meeting – potential idea of feeding chicken halves at the farm? – Council happy to assist Dean’s rebuttal: Thank you for the advice, sincerely appreciate assistance throughout the year as well as at the meetings M&O is really complicated and don’t think there is any perfect way to explain it, but there are basics, funding sources do not allow us to transfer building money over for salaries It has become obvious that we have been competing with ourselves – we are asking for everything It is likely we won’t have a capitol project on our request list which gives us less internal competition – hopefully will give M&O more traction – will give the current approach one more year and make changes as necessary after 2015 Academic side moving away from total number of students to focus on graduation rates – performance of how students do will be used as a factor Beverly’s retirement will leave a huge hole in the college – her ability to work well with Research has been a tremendous attribute to the College – she will replace and Steve Brown will be asked to be the interim director – the hire process will be long because of UGA politics but as quick as possible and will not occur before FY15 – a national search will be conducted Raises - average university raise will be 3%, hope to give 2% raise across the board in CAES but aren’t sure what the exact amount will be and will do what they can - expect permission from Sr. Administration, moral has been effected from not receiving raises for 6+ years – this may mean a little less hiring will take place Council members are free to talk to any Regent they wish to – President Morehead cannot dictate this If there is something that a Council member wants to ask them specifically for – please ask the Dean for this permission There is a new procedure for building approval – talk with the Dean before asking a Regent to fund a building Council awards are a good idea – Friend of the College – pick somebody each year that they feel make an impact and help the Council
