IMPORTANT: Using a Facebook profile (personal account) is against Facebook’s user policy. Benefits of groups Control who sees posts. Have the ability to message members. Similar benefits to a page. Share photos, links, etc. Create events. Upload documents. Benefits of groups, cont. All members notified of new post. (Unless member turns off notifications.) Can see who has viewed a post. Can have as many as you want. Considerations Admins must link your personal account. There should be at least two admins. Can be volunteers, 4-H’ers. Facebook does not allow members under 13. Invite parents to join. Considerations, cont. Can only add friends. Tell members to request to join. You must have an account to join or view a group. Remember: have an alternate way to communicate. Associate with Georgia, UGA, etc., so people know they are at the right place. If an account already exists… Try contacting the admin. They may be able to make you an admin. You may be able to get them to delete it. If an account already exists… If you don’t know who runs the page or group: “Like” the page/join the group, post message directing people to official group. If an account already exists… May be a lost cause. Designate your page as the “official” one. Best strategy: have the most compelling and up to date content. Public account Recruit members. Get community support. Tip: Instead of having a separate account for public messages, just use an account that represents the entire county office. Considerations Make sure more than one person knows the login information. Associate with Georgia, UGA, etc., so people know they are at the right place. You’ll need to approve followers on protected accounts. Online photos Make sure you have parent’s permission. Code of conduct should cover, but ask to be sure. Best to have a secure album where only select people have access. Online photos, cont. Against terms of use. Choose who you share with (create lists): www.facebook.com/help/459934584025324/ Administering a Facebook group gives members a direct link to your profile. Professionalism Don’t friend 4-H’ers. Give heads up that you won’t be accepting friend requests. Remember that your profile picture is public. Representing Georgia 4-H/UGA.
