7. Reason for this curriculum action
This course will help students to understand how and why the sport was developed, significant sports practices of
the native Hawaiians, and their relationship to the sea and 'aina (land.) It will teach the significance of sports in the
Hawaiian culture and how they were/are unique identifiers of the native identity. This course will add to the depth
and range of current HWST course offerings.
This course addresses MCC Strategic Plan goal #3, objectives 1&2 to continue support for the study of diverse cultures
and languages to support Hawaii students who wish to explor their cultural roots; and to preserve and perpetuate
Hawaiian culture, language and values.
