5. Reason for this curriculum action
To better align MCC’s HPC program with three other community colleges in the national
consortium for High Performance Computing (HPC) in MCC’s National Science Foundation grant.
The certificate is required to meet the expectations of the National Center for HPC. This center
delivers metric information used in evaluation of Regional Education and Training Centers
(RETCs). Number of certificate offerings is one of the metrics. MCC is a HPC RETC.

The High Performance Computing (HPC) Certificate is comprised of the 19 credits currently
required for the ECET HPC specialty in the current catalog (see page 39). The courses are:
ICS 251(4), 252(4), 258(3), 275(4), and 298 (4).
This certificate provides evidence that the student meets SLO’s for HPC. Employers will recognize
this certificate. The students with this certificate will have better access to HPC employment.
