COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: Acquaints students with a variety of
hispanic cultures using film, short story, poetry, internet and guest
speakers. Uses previously-acquired Spanish language skills to
explore and appreciate Hispanic culture. Taught in Spanish and
English.

GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To instill greater awareness of cultural diversity between Spanish speaking countries, through introduction to a variety of
literature, film, music and conversation with native speakers. To
gain greater understanding and comfort in using
advanced grammatical constructs.

SPECIFIC COURSE COMPETENCIES
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
a. Define political issues relating to different countries in Latin
America
b. Read at a higher level of Spanish and with greater confidence
c. Discuss current events in Spanish with greater fluency and more
background information
d. Prepare a new recipe
e. Network with Spanish speakers in the community on Maui
f. Write with greater accuracy and clarity in Spanish
g. Comprehend spoken Spanish with greater ease and accuracy
h. Recognize and discuss cultural differences between the different
countries studied in the course.

RECOMMENDED COURSE CONTENT
The course should focus on cultural, political and economic issues of
approximately 3-6 different Spanish-speaking countries over the semester.
The instructor should choose countries of current interest and individual
specialization. A variety of media including literature, film, guest speakers,
artists, and musicians should be included.
