Offers basic introduction to counseling processes to those working or planning to work in the helping professions including Early

Childhood Education. Discusses theories and practices of counseling and interviewing individuals and groups. Gives students opportunities to practice skills through roleplaying. Not intended to be preparation for counseling professionals.

5. General Course Objectives

To describe and analyze basic counseling and interviewing theories and practices and provide practice in the skills used in effective counseling.

6. Specific Course Objectives, Competencies, and Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: a) Compare and contrast basic counseling and interviewing theories and practices. b) To compare and contrast the strengths-based and problem-oriented perspectives in counseling. c) Describe the qualities of an effective counselor and compare and contrast to self via self-assessment. d) Identify, practice, and demonstrate skills to effectively engage individuals in interviewing and counseling sessions. e) Identify and practice skills that enhance the culturally sensitive use of interviewing and counseling techniques. f) Identify personal, ethical, and cultural assumptions and barriers related to the provision of effective interviewing and counseling services.
