Course Description This course gives students practice with real world skills used in the modern business environment; emphasizes proper technique and speed with the ten-key pad found on calculators, computer keyboards, and cash registers; develops the ability to work with numbers and use of a calculator to perform business computations. 3. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES Familiar with the functions of the electronic paper tape calculator, be able to use the numeric keypad on the computer keyboard, and the WINDOWS calculator Demonstrate knowledge of basic business computational procedures Demonstrate ability to use critical thinking skills to determine the most efficient approach to quantitative computational problems. 6. SPECIFIC COURSE COMPETENCIES At the end of this course, the student will be able to Key by touch at a minimum speed of 100 ndpm (net depression per minute) on three 5-minute timing drills Demonstrate ability to use the grand total function, add mode, accumulation, percent, and constant and decimal settings on the electronic calculator Demonstrate the use of the repeat functions of the electronic calculator Store into and retrieve from memory on the electronic calculator Change paper tape and ribbon on the electronic paper tape calculator Demonstrate proficiency on the computer ten-key pad using the Touch Key software. Complete a variety of data entry applications with speed and accuracy on the computer 10-key and the electronic calculator. 7. RECOMMENDED COURSE CONTENT AND APPROXIMATE TIME SPENT 1-2 weeks-----Orientation to the calculator and finger placement drills. Skill drills. 1-2 weeks-----Addition, subtraction, multiplications, division, add mode, and mixed computational problems on 10-key. Skill drills. 1-2 weeks-----Accumulative multiplication and division, constant multiplication and division. Skill drills. 1-2 weeks-----Business applications on 10-key including invoicing using memory and grand total, markups, discounts and taxes using the % key, and payroll applications 1-2 weeks-----WINDOWS calculator applications, data entry using computer software on business applications 8. RECOMMENDED COURSE REQUIREMENTS Specific course requirements are at the discretion of the instructor at the time the course is being offered.
