General Course Objectives: Art 101 is an introductory course that assumes no prior knowledge of art, or art experience. This course explores art and the functions of art from man’s first record of involvement up to our own time in history. This is not specifically a history of art course, but addresses history when appropriate. The student participates as the observer as well as the artist. The course responds to the functions, meanings and understanding of art, as well as the nature of the creative process. Various art disciplines, media and observation are experienced through lectures, films, art exhibits, and doing an art project. 6. On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: a. demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the elements of art, principles of design, and the creative process; b. demonstrate a familiarity with major historical movements in art and be able to explain how art relates to its time; c. express own ideas in various visual media and forms; d. demonstrate an understanding and awareness of the various art media; e. describe the visual arts’ influences on quality of life; f. analyze art works by writing answers to essay questions. 7.
