Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of raw material resources that contribute to the
production of wood fibre manufactured products; raw material
resource flows in a wood fibre manufacturing plant; and raw
material resources and their impact on production processes
and final wood fibre manufactured product quality and value.

Explanatory notes
1
All evidence requirements must be demonstrated and assessed in accordance with
the reference text: Describe wood fibre raw material resources and their use in wood
fibre manufacturing, published by Competenz and available from Competenz at
http://www.competenz.org.nz, or Competenz, PO Box 9005, Newmarket, Auckland

The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard:
a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed
the code) for personal, product, and worksite health and safety, and must meet
the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety
in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their
subsequent amendments.
b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This
includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities,
events, and decisions.
c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be
in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing, and method.

Worksite refers to the candidates own place of employment in the wood fibre
manufacturing industry. For other people, the worksite will be either a local worksite
or a typical New Zealand worksite. For these learners, the Industry Training
Organisation will ensure that the training given by accredited providers meets these
standards.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of raw material resources that contribute to the production of
wood fibre manufactured products.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Raw material resources are identified for all wood fibre manufactured products
produced at the worksite.
1.2
Product types within the raw material resources identified are described for all
wood fibre manufactured products produced at the worksite.
1.3
The relationship between raw material resources is described in terms of solid
wood product market demands, log supply, and the general state of the
economy.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of raw material resource flows in a wood fibre manufacturing
plant.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Sources of raw material resources for a specified wood fibre manufacturing
plant are described.
2.2
Wood fibre manufactured products derived from raw material resources for a
specified wood fibre manufacturing plant are described.
2.3
By-products generated in the production of wood fibre manufactured products
and the reprocessing steps for each of these by-products are described.
2.4
Market destinations for specified wood fibre manufactured products are
described.

Outcome 3
Demonstrate knowledge of raw material resources and their impact on production
processes and final wood fibre manufactured product quality and value.
Evidence requirements
3.1
The physical characteristics of the raw material resources used at a specified
wood manufacturing plant are described.
physical characteristics may include – moisture content, density,
size, shape, thickness, storage time, colour;
evidence of a minimum of three is required.
Range
3.2
Measures used to control the variation in these physical characteristics are
described with reference to specific raw material resources.
3.3
The interrelationship between the physical characteristics of the raw material
resources and the performance of the production processes, and of the final
wood fibre product quality, are described for a specified wood fibre product.
3.4
Percentage value of wood fibre resources compared to the total cost of
production is identified.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs). The
