People credited with this unit standard are able to: manage
hazards associated with grinding bandwheels; clean and
prepare machine for bandwheel grinding; prepare grinding
equipment; grind bandwheel; and check bandwheel grinding.

Range

The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard:
a All work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented
worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed
the code) for personal, product and worksite health and safety, and must meet the
obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in
Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.
b All work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This
includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities,
events, and decisions.
c All evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be
in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing and method.

Definition
Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or
other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of
managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production,
and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures,
company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Manage hazards associated with grinding bandwheels.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Hazards associated with grinding bandwheels are identified and actions to be
taken to isolate, minimise or eliminate the hazards are described in accordance
with worksite policies and procedures.
Range
1.2
grinding wheel disintegration, loose grinding wheel, exposure to
grinding coolant.
Safe work practices associated with grinding bandwheels are identified and
used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and legislative
requirements.
Range
practices may include but are not limited to – isolation procedures,
lock-outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, wearing
appropriate safety equipment;
evidence of five is required.
Outcome 2
Clean and prepare machine for bandwheel grinding.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Bandsaw machine, bandwheels, and work areas are cleaned of all foreign
matter that could affect grinding operations.
2.2
Scraper, guides, guards and shear plate are removed in accordance with
manufacturer's specifications and/or worksite policies and procedures.
2.3
Bandwheel is checked for wear in accordance with worksite policies and
procedures.
Outcome 3
Prepare grinding equipment.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Grinding equipment is checked for wear and is lubricated in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations and/or worksite policies and procedures.
Range
3.2

Grinding stone is selected to suit bandwheel composition.

Barrel is set up for grinding in accordance with worksite policies and
procedures.

Personal safety equipment is used in accordance with worksite policies and
procedures.

Outcome 4
Grind bandwheel.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Grinding covers whole face of the wheel.
4.2
All wear is removed.
4.3
Wheel face is ground in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and/or
worksite policies and procedures.
Range
4.4
flat or crown.
Bandwheel edges are deburred after grinding in accordance with worksite
policies and procedures.
Outcome 5
Check bandwheel grinding.
Evidence requirements
5.1
Bandwheel face is checked for hollows and ridges, using a straight edge held at
right angles to the wheel edge and at right angles to the wheel face.
5.2
Bandwheel is measured with steel tape to check circumference is in accordance
with worksite policies and procedures.
5.3
Scrapers, guides, guards, and shear plate are replaced in accordance with
worksite policies and procedures and legislative requirements.
5.4
Machine is test-run and saw tracking is checked in accordance with worksite
policies and procedures.
5.5
Any identified faults are rectified in accordance with worksite policies and
procedures.
